Chapter 15

Valerie’s P.O.V.

“I’m home!” I call out, stepping through the front door.

“Are you packed?” My mom asks, crossing her arms over her chest.

    “Packed?”

“Did you forget? You’re going to your dad’s this week.”

“Oh.” I say, biting down on my lip. “I’ll go pack right now.”

“He called me earlier. He’s on his way.” She says. “And here’s your phone back. Call me if you need anything, okay?”

    I nod. “Okay.”

“I’ve got to go to work. I’ll see you later.” She says, giving me a kiss on the forehead and hugging me. “Love you.”

“Love you too.” I tell her with a gentle smile as she steps out the door. I let out a sigh of relief and head into my room. I grab a duffle bag and start packing my things. I dial Ashton’s number and continue packing as the line rings.

    “Hello?” He asks, nervously.

    “Hey, it’s me.”

He let out a sigh of relief. “Valerie. Good. I thought it was your mum or something.”

I laugh. “No, just me.” I grab my flat iron and shove it in my bag.

    “Are you ungrounded?”

“Not really. I mean, I’m going to my dad’s house for a week.”

“Oh shit. Is that this week?”

“Yeah.” I tell him, biting down on my bottom lip.

“How far does he live from here?”

“Half an hour, maybe?” I say, fumbling around in my drawers.

    “What are you doing?”

    “Packing.” I tell him.

    “Oh.”

“You okay? You sound kind of upset.”

“No, I’m okay. It’s just, I’m really gonna miss you.”

I sigh. “Yeah, I’m gonna miss you too, but I’m still gonna see you at school.”

“Yeah, but it’s gonna be weird not hanging out with you.”

“I can probably convince my dad to give me a ride to your house or something.”

“You really think your dad would do that?” Ashton asks.

“Not really sure, honestly.” I let out a sigh. “Ashton, are you sure you’re alright? You were really upset earlier but you sound kind of sad again. Did something happen?”

“No, I’m good. I swear. I’m just tired.”

“I don’t buy it.” I say, setting my things aside and pulling the phone up to my ear. “Ashton, tell me what’s going on.”

    “My mum’s just being horrible.”

    “What’d she do?”

“She’s not gonna be home for another while. I don’t know. She’s just never home. I just miss her and now that you’re gonna be gone for a week, I’m even more upset because I’m gonna have another person to miss.”
