The trip on the train seemed pointless to Alice but she new better than to argue with her father so she did as she was told. The red train sent steam flying around the place but all she could think was how long and boring the ride would be but these types of ungrateful thoughts stopped when she saw a pair of ginger boys swept her up. "Hello little Miss Dumbledore." Her squeal only highlighted their sudden and random actions but they ignored the looks. "I have met your mother. I am sure that she told you to keep away from mischief." They looked at one another and nodded but decided not to agree with her. "George." Her eyebrow rose at the twin she knew to be George "I know that out of the two of you, you are the most level headed." He only shook his head 'no' and the three boarded together. Prank after prank they planned until it was time to get changed for school. Her robes fit perfectly and her hair hung precisely. "You should have seen her. Her face fell and it looked like I was dying. You would have thought that she didn't teach transfigurations at Hogwarts." The three laughed but they knew of the love that she felt for the professor.
"Firs' ye'rs with me." A gruff voice spoke as they all approached. "Hagrid." His eyes wandered down to the silver that stood before him. "Stay outta trouble won' yer." She made no promises but instead asked for his help to get into the boat. She was sat in with two other students that were obviously muggle-born. "Alice. Nice to meet you." The pair shook her hand and smiled. They had managed a conversation and they seemed to step out from their shells. "When did you get your letter?" They both pondered the question but they had arrived at the other side already. Unfortunately for her. "C-can we stay with you?" His voice was gentle and supportive. "Of course. I know Hogwarts fairly well myself." Oscar and Noah were close friends already as they had attended their muggle school together so she didn't dare try get between them but instead let them include her. "Alright." There that familiar stern voice sounded and Alice found herself relaxing at the sound. They were walked in and after she had been given the go ahead Minerva walked them all into the hall. A few familiar faces greeted her but she only shyly responded as fear crept in. As much as she didn't mind what house she was in, she still wanted to be with her friends.
"Alice Minerva Dumbledore." Albus leaned forward in his seat in order to pay close attention. Her legs slowly and nervously came to the stool as she stared longingly at the red table. "I will be proud of you no matter the house." Minerva whispered and Alice responded just as quietly "Thanks Mamma." The fabric was placed onto her head and Minerva stepped a few paces back. The hat felt strange on her head but she pretended that is didn't as all eyes rested on her. "Ah, Cunning like your Mother. Brave like your father and intelligent like Minerva. I also see your loyalty and caring side that Poppy taught you." It was all inside her head but still she mumbled and Minerva could hear the first word only 'please' Alice was begging "Please Gryffindor." The hat thought longer until he asked her if she was sure and she nodded. "Very well, GRYFFINDOR!" The red house all cheered and she sat with the twins. "Ali, welcome to the dark side." She laughed them off and found her father looking at her with a gleam of love. Oscar and Noah joined her side moments later and she hugged them both as they sat. The table filled rapidly until all of the students were sorted and the welcome speech was given to the students. The year was freeing and the warning about the forest and lake made Alice silently think 'let natural selection get them. If they are stupid enough to wander into the dark woods.' The thought was brief and she ignored it as the speech closed and food appeared. Alice ate some food but the train ride was filled with snacks so she wasn't hungry really.
"Who is that man and woman who keep staring at you?" Alice lifted her eyes to find her father not taking his focus from her. "Professor Dumbledore. My father and the headmaster. The woman who keeps staring and smiling is Professor McGonagall, Transfiguration professor and head of Gryffindor." They kept looking up at the table and studying the teachers until she gave in and announced all of the names of the professors. "He looks mean." All of the students that knew him laughed and nodded. "When I was a kid I used to call him mean man. Like some superhero or something." The table erupted into laughter again and the seventh years who could remember six year old her could remember the name she called him. "Aside from that they are all lovely. Just do as you are told and it will be fine." Fred butted in and Alice felt her face turn the brightest red. "Yeah well, you have slept with all the others I am pretty sure. Aside from the Defence teacher but only because the position is cursed." Her foot came into contact with his shin under the table. "I was a child." Fred laughed as he rubbed the sore leg. "You slept with Mummy McGonagall a year ago. She must be the second best mother. Second to ours. Well, she cannot tell us apart but still. I see why you chose her as a mother." Her glare was intense and her tone threatening as she made it clear "leave my birth mother out of it. I haven't forgotten her." Noah made the mistake of asking a further question "is McGonagall your mother?" She shook her head 'no'. Before anyone could say another word she got up and left the hall. She was never sure why she got so funny about her mother but she did. Tears threatened her eyes but she didn't let them fall as she spoke the password to the common room. Her bag was on the bed already so she changed into her pyjamas and read a book of hers.
When she had nearly read the first three chapters she was greeted by the girls in her year. She had made polite conversation with them and so she wasn't too fussed with forcing conversation. "The ginger boys want to talk to you." She sighed and forced a smile as she thanked the girl. Getting to her feet she flew down the stairs at great speed and meeting the same face twice over. "I want to say sorry." Fred began and George finished "he didn't think it through." A huff was made and she made a comment about never thinking it through. They were silenced when a sharp voice spoke. "Boys, do you not have a bed to get to?" They grumbled a 'yes Professor' and walked up the steps with their heads held high. "What on earth got into you?" Her voice told Alice that no amount of 'nothing' would stop the conversation but her stubborn Gryffindor came out. "Nothing." Piercing blue eyes stared her down rapidly and Alice felt uneasy. "Do not lie to me." Alice looked anywhere but up and she studied her shoes and new tie. "I am fine." The defiance was visible in her voice and so was the hesitation. "You have always been stubborn. I remember trying to get you to wear a headband when you were three." A faint smile flicked across her features at the memory. "Can I sleep now Professor?" The question was a mistake due to the glare of 'stop calling me that' decorating her features. Albus then walked in also. "Ah, Minerva I can speak to her." The older woman moved but didn't leave. "That was quite the statement. I dare say that the twins will leave your mother and Minerva alone now." Her face was hidden by the silver hair that played the role of a pair of curtains. "What did they say?" Her voice was sharper than before. "Nothing mean it was just too close for comfort to dear Alice." Her face was hidden extremely well so Minerva had to try read the body language but nothing could be taken from it. "Ali cat. Look at me big girl." Her pale features came into view as a few tears were collecting on her face. "Come here dear." Minerva pulled her into a hug but Alice pulled away. "I" She had to stop as she struggled for breath to complete the sentence. "I do not know what they said but what ever it is..." Minerva wasn't sure of what to stay. This was when Minerva noticed Albus not being there anymore. "I killed my mum." Blue eyes met and a face of utter hopelessness met a face of utter helplessness. "My dear, there was no killing going on. This happens all the time with babies and older woman." Alice looked miserable but completely ignored it "I wasn't planned or wanted. Daddy got drunk and so did Mum. You only care for me because Daddy is so busy." Minerva was incredibly close to just taking the girl to sleep with her but restrained herself. "Do not be silly. You are the daughter I wish I had. If that was true then I wouldn't look after you ever. You know how persuasive I can be, not to mention stubborn." The pair parted their ways and went to a deep needed sleep.
