Meki

P: That night I fall asleep and let the heavy breathing consume me. He is in my dreams, he stands their in the glowing light. I run to him, my barefeet slap against the cool concrete. I reach towards him . A crack and then he is gone.

I wake up panting, sweat trickles down my forehead and I am covered in too many blankets. The room is too stuffy so I get up and walk to the door. Click, it opens and cool air rushes through the door. I walk out and close the door behind me. I keep walking until I reach my rock in the bushes. I watch the stars and the trees rustling in the wind. I look up and suddenly feel alone. No one knows what I am and how I came to be here.

“Oy you! Whatcha doin?”

A man stands their, his shirt torn and his face in bruises.

“Where am I? Taranta Forest?”

I shake my head, “You are on Kaku Island, Para Jungle.”
“ISLAND, how the hell did I get on a damn island?”

“We all are on an island.”

“We..?”

“Yes, my community is back their. We are on this island.”

His face dropped, “What year is it?”

I frown. “I am not sure, okay. Look guy. I don’t know who you are or why you are here but please just leave. Go home! To your family.”

His face crumples and his mouth quivers. Tears roll down his cheeks and his face goes a ghastly white.

“I am lost, I was walking for food from a fire when all of a sudden I ended up somewhere else. I don’t know where I am. You have to help, I have family that would be worried sick.”
I gasp, “You mean you made it into this world!”

He nods.

I laugh, “Oh my god, thank you. Thank you so much. You don’t know how much this means to me to find I am not the only one.”

He stamps his foot and firmly walks over to me, grabbing my collar on my shirt he holds me up.

“My FAMILY is out their ALONE a forest and you are thanking me for killing them.”

I push him back, he stumbles, trips and falls onto the ground.

“Look guy, all I was saying was that I am unconscious somewhere about a hundred thousand years ago. I am in this dreamland and have been so sad that I am the only one who made it here. I was just relieved that I finally found someone who is from another time genre.”

“Oh, I am so sorry. I didn’t mean…”

I cut him off, “You didn’t mean too, geez. I thought I found someone to help me but instead found a jerk with a mouth who can’t control it. Have fun in the jungle, remember not to eat the dark berries found by the river.” I wave and then head back to my house.

“Wait, please help. I am alone and maybe I am a jerk with an uncontrollable mouth but I am still human.”

I turn, fold my arms and walk back. I grab his arm and drag him along with me, “Fine, but I am taking you to Mayor Hayes house.”

We continue in silence until he blurts out. “My name is Meki.”

“Nice to meet you Meki, my name Taji.”

We finally reach the borders of the camp and enter the gates.

I knock on the door of Mayor Hayes house and wait, “Mayor Hayes. I found someone in the jungle. I thought you may of wanted to know.”

“Coming, what was that dear?”

“I found this guy in the jungle and he says he was walking around and got lost.”

He butts in, “actually I was in a different time….”

I elbow him in the ribs and glare at him. His eyes open wide and he closes his mouth.

“What was that man?”

“Nothing and its Meki Jartz”

“What tribe are you from?” Mayor asks.

“Uhhh… The Jartzers”

Mayor holds her chin and then squints, “I have never heard of the tribe ‘The Jartzers’.”

“No we split from another tribe, been so long that I don’t remember the name.”

Sh nods, “Oh well you can definitely stay with us Meki. You can work at the Dugers, tomorrow at noon.”

She closes the door and leaves. I groan and start to walk.

“Taji? What is the Dugers?”

“Where everyone does their business, don’t worry though at noon their isn’t so much their because at the morning shift they clean everything up and their isn’t nothing their.”

He nods and then grumbles, “Great. Best day of my life. Lost, in another time genre and have the job of cleaning out poo. Great, great, great.”

“Well at least you don’t have the job of killing the food for dinner. Reeks and you can’t get the stench out for days. Anyway here is where you will stay, you can stay on my couch and the pantry is their if you want a snack. Goodnight and see you tomorrow. I will show you round.”

I walk away to my bed but he asks me something.

“Why don’t you have a job?”

“Because I have been very sick for the last week and I finally got out yesterday. I have a week until I have to do my job again which is to find things or people in the jungle.”

“Oh, well goodnight and thank you again. I thank you so much for giving me shelter and helping me find out why I am like this.”

I nod and leave him. There's a few noises until silence. I finally fall asleep and go into blackness.

 

E: I wake up in my bed and I am sweating. I decide that i need a break and I am going to make a trip down to the waterfall today to go for a swim. I send a message to Ray by bird and he comes to my door in an instant. We have to be quiet so we don’t wake Meki. He comes and sits on my bed with me to help me pack for the days trip to the waterfall with our friends. “I missed you.” He says. I am kind of shocked he said that. I didn’t think he liked me in that way, but if he missed me then why didn’t he come and visit me. I am kind of angry. “Why didn’t you visit me then! I was so lonely.”

“I didn’t want to see you when you were sick, it wasn’t something I wanted to watch. You getting sicker and sicker.” He looks down shyly. I cover his hand with mine and he covers mine with his. Call me selfish but in this moment I forgot I had a fiance. He looks up at me and his blue eyes draw me in. They are such a warm blue. He stares back. I don’t know how long we are looking at each other. We finally fall out of eye contact when Meki wakes up and gets out of bed.

“Meki, this is Ray and Ray this is Meki. I found him in the woods last night, long story, don’t ask questions please.”

“Uhh, okay.” Says Ray. “Anyway lets go and get everyone else to come with us to the waterfall Teja.”

“Okay. Do you want to come Meki?” I say.

“Oh, no thanks. I’ll just hang here.” He says.

“Ok, come on Ray.” As we walk out the door he reaches for my hand and our fingers interlace. His hand is smooth and warm. We don’t say anything on the way to get the others, but I know what we are both thinking.
