P:  I can’t afford to lose my best friend Jacki though, so we pull her into the big escape. I grab my pack and stuff as many cans of pre packed food into the small, empty space. I also pack my flashlight, some spare clothes, medicine and my personal items. As we begin to leave with our packs and sleeping bags, Beth wanders out of the forest and stands their, her eyes are bloodshot and her cheeks are stained.

“You’re leaving! Without telling me, I looked up to you Taji and you are LEAVING! Great, I am stuck with those other people and ‘Meki!’,” Beths whispers, but shouts the word Meki, “I trusted you and you take your little friend Jacki who isn’t very special.”

I jump at her but Ray pulls me back, “Hey!” I scream.

She seems to notice of what she said and slaps a hand over her mouth.

“Taji! I… I am so so sorry, I didn’t mean it. I am just so sad and lonely. You have been one of my best friends in this whole lifetime.”

She turns and runs into the darkness, Jacki runs after her but trips over a root in the mud.

I turn to Ray, “Go pack a bag, please. The more food the better and I can’t leave her like this! Especially by Meki, he is a mental case and she is so innocent.”

Ray holds my hand and squeezes it, but eventually lets go and runs back to Beths tent.

I wave Jacki over, “We go find Beth and meet Ray by the waterfall.”

Jacki nods and we start to jog the direction of where Beth departed. We run for a while until we hear a small whimper. It is coming from below our feet.

“Beth?”

“Taji? Jacki? Ray? Help, he is coming for me.”

“Who Beth?” I kneel down and flick the switch on my flashlight, it shines a bright light down a dark hole and Beth sits their with her big eyes.

A quiet whisper and I struggle to hear, but in the silent night I understand.

Beth breathes.

“Meki”

E:   I stare at Beth. So does Jacki and Ray.

She looks innocently up at us, shaking.

“He said tha--.”

“It’s okay Beth. We’re leaving. C’mon, help me get her up.”

“No, you don’t understa--.” Whimpers Beth.

“Shh, shh, it’s gonna be okay.” I reply, in the most comforting voice I can muster. We pull her up and give her the backpack.

“You don’t have to hide from him Beth. He doesn't know we’re leaving.” I say. Beth looks shyly down at her feet. I grow suspicious.

“Did you tell him we were leaving?” I am nervous for her answer.

“No, but he said he would be watching us. He could be anywhere, and that’s why I hid.” She whispers.

“Its okay, lets go before anything else happens. We all swing our backpacks over our shoulders and start to run in the opposite direction of the tribe. We run into the jungle letting the darkness of the night swallow us up.
