Descisions

P: “If you don’t mind, you two love birds. I would like to carry on before the mad man comes back and kills us all.” Jacki says.

I push Ray away and nod, “Yeah, sure. Sorry, yeah.”

I busy myself so I don’t think about the moment with Meki, as I grab everything, Ray and Jacki share concerning looks at each other.

I grab the big pack and shrug it onto my shoulders. I start to walk when Jacki grabs my shoulder and pulls me back.

“Taji, I am really concerned about you. Let Ray take it, he is the man of course. You shouldn’t have left with him, Ray knew it was a bad idea but he let you since he loves you. He is practically hurting himself because of it.”

“Tell him not to be, Meki is crazy and of course I saw that coming but I thought I would be more prepared.””

“If you saw it coming, why did you go?”

“I had the knife in my boot but I was completely shocked that I forgot, okay. Leave me alone.”

I turn away and walk again, their footsteps slowly starting to catch up to me. A few minutes later, Ray slips the bag off my back and places it on his.

He grunts and walks off again.

The sun finally rises and the tree’s create sinister shadows on the crumbly dirt. Ray stops and sets up camp.

“I think we should rest so we have enough energy for tomorrow. I believe that the tribe is a couple of miles from here.”

I nod and help him, as I lean over to grab the food, his hand briefly touches mine and he smiles. I smile back and hum as I make a meat sandwich.

After our breakfast, I sleep into a deep sleep and I barely feel Ray slide in next to me and throw a blanket over us.

I turn away and finally falls into a sleep dreaming of a shadowy monster, Meki.

E: After we have gained most of our energy back we decide to get going. We know we aren’t far off the the tribe. I just hope from now on we don’t have to many hold ups along the way. I walk in between Jacki and Ray. To be honest, I would rather just be alone with Ray, but what kind of friend would I be to leave Jacki? I let my thoughts course through my brain. I feel like my thoughts are the only thing private to me anymore, and even then, sometimes I still feel like someones trying to get inside my head. My thoughts stop as Ray reaches for my hand and laces his fingers between mine. I definitely know what I want now. I want Ray, not Meki, obviously. I’m still not completely used to Ray, we’ve only kissed a couple times...ok maybe more than a couple, but his touch still sends shivers down my spine. He looks down and smiles at me. It’s only now that I realise how tall he is. It makes me feel small, but in a good way. I can’t help but have the feeling that things are going to get better from now on.
