The Tornado's Gift

P:    Meki is sitting up and shaking.

“Meki…” I was about to ask what was wrong when I hear it.

Dead silence.

“Meki, why is it so quiet?”

All he does is point at the window and then points at the sky.

I get up and make my way to the windowsill. I lean over and look up, the sky is dark and it is windy. Too windy. Tornado.

I knew it would happen. I then back away from the window when I realise that we are in the middle of the storm. I shrink back to the couch until I lay down and quiver along with Meki.

ALl we do is wait until the roar of the wind comes back to life and the wood gets shredded along with anything else in its way. I lean into Meki and hug him.

“I am so sorry. You were right.” He whispers.

I nod and hug him tighter, “I don’t want to die.”

“You won’t. You are brave Taji.” He places his head on my head.

I lay my head on his chest and sigh. We wait until the final wind destroys its last victim and then disappears to another part of the town.

I get up and shake my head, Ray.

“Ray, I have to see him.”

Meki pulls me back down, “No, too dangerous.”

As he pulls me down, he moves and I land on his lap.

He pushes me round and cradles me. His finger touches my lips to quieten me.

He moves his head down and I move my head up. His lips brush against mine and I am won by his beauty. I put my hands behind his neck and kiss him harder. I hold his cheek, caught up in the moment. Until I realise two things.

What about Ray?

What about Geromy?

“I am so sorry Meki but I can not be with you.”

He nods to show he understands.

“Ray, is your true love?”

I nod, “But I am caught up with loving Geromy too.”

“Your fiancee” He breaths.

“Yes”

We sit their in silence until we hear calls from outside.

I get up and put my hand up at Meki for him to stay.

I walk to the door and open it. I peer out and see a group of people standing around.

“Who are you?”

“Where are we?”

“I don’t know but I was just at a camp and now am lost.”

“So was I!”

My eyes widen as I realise my prediction had been correct.

“You guys, come inside now. Too cold, too windy. You could be dead.” I call.

They see me and walk closer, “You have food?” one calls.

I nod, they all run over and squish into my small but cosy cottage.

Some sit on the floor while others sit next to Meki on the couch.

I close the door and walk to talk to them, the next hours I tell them about myself, Ray, Hayley and Meki. About how we are on this island and are from different places. Someone cries out in alarm and it saddens me.

One boy raises his hand, “Yes?” I ask him.

“Could we say our names to each other?”

I nod.

We sit in a circle and one girl goes first.

“I am Sophie.”

“I am Danny.”

“I am Blake.”

“I am Kreuger.”

“I am Pi.”

“My name is Meki.”

“My name is Taji and their is also Ray and Hayley. Ray is in hospital with a damaged ankle right now.”

Everyone nods and then Sophie starts to cry.

“I miss my family.” She blurts out and then continues to cry. I crawl over to her and hug her.

“Shh. It is alright. Everyone here feels for you and we know everything about how your feeling.”

The hours pass until night comes in and everyone closes their eyes for their first night in my village. I though couldn’t get to sleep, something nagged at me and I couldn’t shrug it off until I finally caught the Sleep train and was heading off to Sleepville. Where all the dreams come true.

E:  I wake up to the sound of quiet chatter amongst everyone. I tell them to make themselves at home and everyone thanks me for the shelter and warmth I am providing them with. I tell them that Meki and I have to go and see Ray in the hospital. They all stay in the house while me and Meki get ready and head out the door. We arrive at the hospital and sign ourselves in. We go to the room 3, level 6. There is Ray, looking a lot better than before. He almost looks like he could walk. We tell him about the people we found and that they are staying in my cottage and so is Meki. He looks a little suspiciously at Meki but I interrupt by saying, “We gotta go.” I walk up to Ray and he puts his hands gently around my neck. He pulls me down and I pull back. He looks a little hurt, but I just can’t do it. Not yet anyway. Meki and I are walking back to our cottage through the wind and rain, when a report beams through the villages speakers. It’s the mayors voice. “Please everyone report to the town's square immediately. An update is required.” There is a big rush of people and Meki and I jog to the towns square. She is taking to us about the damage that has been reported and something about the hospital being over run with injured people from flying debris. I’m not really listening though, i’m looking up at the dark, swirling sky and thinking about the force that mother nature can bring, and feeling the sodden earth squelch under my black boots. And that’s when it happens. The wind has finally picked up. Mayor Hayes sends us back to our homes immediately, and everyone is in a running panic on the way back to their small, frail cottages.
