The Pain

P:   “Ray, hang on for a while. Can you wait half an hour?”

“I guess, but please get them here quickly. It hurts like hell. Maybe not hell, maybe like death.”

I sit their shocked that he would bring that up, “Don’t say that. You are not going to die!”

“I don’t know Teji. I feel like I could, but I probably won’t.”

“You won’t probably die, you WON’T die!”

He goes to say something but passes out from tiredness.

I get up and walk to the edge of the pool, I realise that I still have my togs on and I dive in. Letting the coolness capture me, I float for a while until the sun disappears behind the tree’s and the moon comes out.

I clamber out and sit next to Jacki who made a campfire, “What is taking them so long?”

“We have no idea, they must be stuck or lost. We hope they come soon though. Ray is in a lot of pain.”

“Yeah…” I start to think about a plant I saw where I changed. It looked a lot like a Shmeeler Healer berry that heals anything. Well it soothes the pain. Basically a pain killer. The berry also has the healing leaves the will close a cut but not heal the pain. That is why they go together. I get up and run into the tree’s. The darkness is dark but not so dark that I can not see anything. I make my way half blindly into the tree’s coldness. Until I remember the bush and see it in the distance. I jog slowly until I reach the bush and look around, I keep looking until I see the Shmeeler Healer berries. I grab a bunch of berries and leaves and stuff them into my cloaks pocekts. I then turn and make my way back, I start to walk and then end up at the same spot again. I try numerous of times until I give up. I shout out, “HELP, HELP. Rowan, Hayley, Jacki, Mason! HELP”

I hear shouts and calls and then see people coming towards me. “Jacki, I found you.”

I realise that this is not Jacki but another tribe, with very sharp weapons. I turn and run silently into the night. I keep on running until I see the campfire up ahead. I grab a cup, fish water out of the pond and chuck it onto the flames. It dies and everyone moans.

“Taji, why did you do that. It is freezing and you are just going to kill us.”

“No, I was in the jungle and I saw another tribe with weapons. They are coming this way. You may die of being cold but at least it doesn’t hurt as much as a knife through the heart!”

They drop their mouths and creep away from the forest.

“You found another tribe! This is impossible. We are going to die. We are, I swear.” Jacki whispers.

“No we aren’t.”

I hear voices and we all go silent.

“I heard someone go this way. It might be them, we better hurry or someone is going to die!” a man’s voice called.

A couple of figures appear in front of the jungles border and they stand their with backpacks.

I realise my mistake and see the medic team.

“Medical team. Over here!”

They see our dark shadows and run over.

“Quickly, he is weakening.” I call.

Then I remember the leaves and berries.

 

E: The medical team come over. I show them the berries and leaves and they take them from my hand and put them in their pockets. “Who’s the injured one?” Says one of the men in white.

“Oh whoops, he’s over by the fire, we forgot him” Says Hayley. We all walk over to where the fire used to be.

“Geez guys! Could you not hear me yelling at you. I can’t run you know!” Yells Ray.

“Okay. where’s the spot.” Says the other medical guy calmly. “Oh no, it’s infected we are going to need to take him back with us on the stretcher. For now we will use these leaves and berries to heal the wound and kill the pain. But we need to deal with this infection at the hospital.”

“Why can’t we just have a normal day!” I say, frustrated. “Why can’t I just have a normal life!” I blurt out. They don’t know i'm not from this world. I figured this isn’t a dream, it’s just another dimension. No one asks me why I said that so I leave it. They take Ray away and I feel at a loss. Me and my friends walk back through the dark jungle to the camp and go to bed. It’s been a long day.
