chapter 11- Kayaks And Kisses

kenzie's p.o.v

I opened the door to reveal Jacob standing there, holding a picnic box.

Maddie insisted on meeting him so she stood behind me, looking him up and down.

"Hey." He says with a wide grin.

"Jake this is my sister Maddie."
I turned behind to look at  Maddie and his eyes flickered to her as well.

"Hello. Nice to meet you. I'm Mackenzie's big sister." Maddie says with an air of haughtiness. I inwardly roll my eyes at that.

"I'm Jacob." He introduces himself and Maddie nods.
"Well you guys have fun. And bring Kenzie home before 9."

I shoot her a glare.

But Jake nodded obediently and I walked out after saying a very stiff bye to Maddie.

Jacob and I mostly chatted  and joked around as he drove us to the beach.

To be honest we were never that close in our friend group. Out of all the boys I had always been a little closer to Hayden and Carson. But the more we spoke the more I realised how similar we both were and I was glad we were becoming close.
He also had a really nice laugh. the kind that made you warm up to him instantly.

When we reached, he opened
the door for me and I hopped out  of the car.

We made our way towards the beach and to my surprise it was completely secluded.

"Is this a private beach?" I asked Jake.
"It belongs to my parents and I'm allowed to come here." He replies casually.

I raise my eyebrows. Imagine being rich enough to own an entire beach.

We walked towards the shore, where he tied a little Kayak to a rock and there were two oars next to it. I took off my shrug and placed it on a rock, incase we fell into the water and it got wet.

"Hop in." Jake said and I grabbed his shoulder jumping into the Kayak. He pushed the Kayak into the water, before grabbing the oars and sitting next to me.
He grabbed the oars and handed me some as well as we paddled into the sea.

"This is fun." I exclaimed and Jake nodded grinning,"isn't it!"

After paddling for a bit and appreciating the warm blue water  we started talking more.

"I want to get to know you more kenzie." Jacob said, tilting his head to the side with a smile on his face.
"What do you wanna know?" I ask with a smile.
"Let's play 20 questions." Jake suggested.
"Okay. I'll ask first. Um.. Do you have a middle name?" I ask randomly.

He nodded looking sheepish.
"Uh yeah...but don't you dare tell the boys..It's umm..it's Pamera."

I laugh,"Jacob Pamera Brown?"
He nodded, his face red with embarrassment and he whispered urgently,"Don't tell anyone kenzie."

I nod,"I won't, but Pamera? That sounds like Panera." I set off into giggles again and Jake rolled his eyes, tickling at my sides.

"STOP stop stop! It's your turn." I breathe out, inbetween giggles.

He thought for a second before he asked, his eyes lighting up.
"Okay what's your favorite Taylor Swift song?"

I giggled at the question.
"Hmm..I have a new favorite each day. Today it's Red."

He nods,"okay now you ask me."

"Who is your best friend?"

He hesitated.
"Um, probably Carson. He's been there for me through a lot of crappy stuff."

"Oh," I said, not quite sure what to say to that.

"My turn to ask you," He said.
he paused for a second.

I shifted my feet, my eyes looking towards the bottom of the kayak.

"Kenzie..do you..do you like Johnny?" He asked me the question very softly but it seemed to ring in my ears.
I looked up at him immediately.
There was hint of curiosity in his eyes and something else I can't make out.

I gulped, thinking about his question for a minute before I shake my head,"No he's just my best friend and nothing else."

That's a lie and I know it.

Jacob seemed satisfied with my answer and he gave me a big grin,"Well just cause he's your best friend I don't want you telling him my middle name."

"Pamera." I teased, dipping my hand into the water and spraying it on him.

"Oh you're on." Jake says as he leaned over to tickle me,and in the process we both lose balance of the boat and it tips over causing us both to fall in.

"You're an idiot." I say smacking his shoulder and he chuckles.
"Come on, let's swim towards the beach." I nod as he swims behind me pulling the Kayak along.

We laid out a small picnic mat that he brought along with him and opened up the basket.
I almost squealed in delight when I saw the stuff he got.

Chocolate covered strawberries, frozen custard, Flaming hot cheetos, avocado toast, waffles and two bottles of Dr. Pepper

He smiled at my reaction and handed me a plate.
We continued our game and I asked him pretty normal questions while he asked me weird ones like,"name a famous guy you would take on a date." To that I promptly replied Cole Sprouse and he shook his head in amusement.

By the time we were done with our food it was 8:45.

"Come on we better get you home."
He got up, offering his hand to me. I took it and he hoisted me up.

"Thanks for today Jacob I had the best time." I said genuinely giving him a wide grin.
"Yeah?" His eyes sparkled as they trailed down from my eyes to my lips.

"Yeah it was really-" but before I could finish my sentence, his lips met mine. I felt my body freeze for a moment.

Not being able to take in the fact that I, Kenzie Ziegler was standing on the beach and kissing Jacob Brown.

As his lips met mine, all my feelings for Johnny momentarily melted away and I felt tingles in my stomach as I slowly kissed back. I had never kissed anyone before but somehow I just seemed to know what I was doing.

He grabbed my bare waist gently, and I wrapped my arms around his neck. He smelt like salt and the sea.
It was heady.

We kissed for what felt like hours before he slowly pulled away with a big smile on his face," Let's get you home so your sister Maddie doesn't get the chance to hang me upside down."

I nodded slowly, as I followed him to his car.He held the door open for me and I went inside my heart beating rapidly.

The whole ride back was silent. I'm guessing he was thinking of the kiss too, but the smile on his face told me he didn't regret it one bit.
But did I?

It feels as if I really did enjoy it.
And I think I do like Jacob.

All that messy brown hair, that boyish wide grin.
