chapter 42- The Game

Johnny's p.o.v

I sat in the locker room with the boys, listening to coach who was giving us a pep talk.

I heard coach saying something about the game starting in ten minutes and pointing out strategies.

I let my mind wander to whether she still cared enough about me to be here today.
She knew how important this game is to me.

"Bro, snap out of it." Carson tapped my shoulder.
"Just try and focus on the game today and then I promise we'll let you think about her as long as you want." Hayden added.

I rolled my eyes, a small dry chuckle escaping my lips at Hayden's desperate expression.

But they're right.
No distractions.

Anyways, she probably won't even come.

kenzie's p.o.v

I followed Ruby down the aisle on the bleachers and sat down.
We had got good seats in the middle, thankfully far away from where Nadia and the rest of the cheerleaders were standing with their ridiculous red and white pom-poms.

I looked down, warily eyeing the three coaches sitting on big chairs near the field.
They were the people Johnny had to impress to get into Yale.
I know he could do it though, he's the fastest player on the team.
They just had to beat the Bulldogs
from Riverdale high.

"Oh the game's starting!" Ruby squealed, as the cheerleaders finished their routine and the Bulldogs from our school, walked onto the field.

My eyes immediately fell on Johnny, who was standing next to Brandon determinedly.

He seemed to be scanning the crowd and my heart stopped when his eyes landed on me.
He visibly gulped and I felt my breath hitch.

The world seemed to stop around us, and it was just me and him.

The speaker's blared loudly,
"Today we have a match between the Riverdale Bulldogs and Millwood Lions!"  Bryce Xaviers, the commentator announced, making the crowd hoot and cheer.

Johnny looked away.

I watched him, (he was team captain) and the captain from the other team, come forward to toss a coin and make their decision.

Johnny won and chose to kick the ball to the opposing team.

I actually didn't know what was really happening, but Ruby was sitting next to me translating everything.

The Bulldogs captain, Ashton Arbab received the ball and ran ahead to the Lions goal post.
Hayden tore behind him, followed by Rush holland and they both tackled Ashton, who threw the ball to Lucas Stadvec.

*1 hour later*

Johnny ran ahead, managing to get the ball from Lucas, running ahead towards the Bulldogs goal, and suddenly Ashton Arbab  dragged him down from behind, pulling him onto the ground.

The crowd booed.
"OI DONT DO THAT YOU CHEATING *******!" Ruby yelled, throwing her fist around and Lauren and I had to pull her onto her seat and calm her down .

I looked anxiously to see Johnny hadn't got hurt except for the fact that his lip was bleeding a little.
The coach said something to Ashton and he walked off, looking pissed.

Brandon got the ball, throwing it to Hayden who gave it a pooch kick, shooting it straight into the Goal.

We all cheered loudly and I saw Johnny with a huge smile on his face, thumping Hayden's back.

"THAT WAS A FIELD GOAL !! OH MY GOD AMAZING!!" Ruby said, standing up and clapping loudly.

"He was brilliant!" Annie exclaimed, her face shining.
I nodded, turning back to the game.

It had been 45 minutes and the two teams were neck and neck.
I watched in awe as Johnny scored a touchdown and with ruby screaming about how he is an amazing holder.

"just another touch down and they'll win." Ruby said, looking at the field hopefully.

"I don't think that Ashton boy will let that happen." Lauren pointed out at the black haired boy who was giving poor Rush menacing looks.

"That Ashton boy is good looking." Brynn winked and I rolled my eyes, focusing on the game.

Ashton played rough and I saw him pushing Carson hard, taking possession of the ball and running towards the Lions  post.
Johnny immediately ran behind him, and they were shoulder to shoulder.
Ashton gave him a shove but Johnny was pretty strong too and sustained himself.

I held my breath as Ashton neared the goal post, but at that very minute, Johnny went flying, grabbing the ball straight out of his hands and running towards the opposite end of the field with Hayden following closely behind him.

They both ran towards the Bulldogs goal post and I watched anxiously as someone came to tackle John.
I watched him say something to Hayden and threw the ball to him.
Hayden caught it and ran straight to the goal.

Johnny was running right next to him and as soon as they neared the goal, the keeper of the post moved infront of Hayden to make sure the ball wouldn't go in.

I watched with baited breath as Hayden threw the ball over to Johnny who threw it straight into the goal.

"TOUCHDOWN!!!!!" Ruby screamed, standing up and hooting.
The crowd erupted into cheers and I watched with a gigantic smile on my face as Hayden and Johnny ran towards their team,who were celebrating really loudly.

Rush threw Johnny over his shoulders, yelling with joy.

"And that my friends was a superb football match; leading the Lions straight to victory. Well done!" Bryce Xaviers voice announced on the mic.

I looked down to the Yale Coaches to see them looking very impressed and pointing towards Hayden and Johnny.

"Come on guys, we better go congratulate them!" Ruby said excitedly.
"Do you want to leave now? I'll come with you if you're not comfortable with facing john yet..?" Annie offered.

I shook my head.
"n..no. It's fine, I think we should congratulate the boys." I gulped and she nodded, slipping her hand into mine.

"Are you going to say anything to him?" She whispered against my hair as we walked down the field.

"Yeah." I mumbled.
"Really? What?" She asked curiously.

He was amazing today, and I owe it to him to say something!

"That's what I'm trying to figure out." I said with a sigh.
