All throughout the day, I've been considering whether or not I want to meet this unknown person. It couldn't be that this person wished to harm me. She agreed to meet at a public place.
Also, there is something very familiar about the voice. I can't quite put a finger on it. I have nothing better to do. I might as well meet this person and get it over with. What could she possibly have to tell me that would even matter at this time?
As I am leaving school, I wonder if I should have mentioned it to Alyssa. What if this is the same person pulling a trick on both of us? I want to confide in someone. I consider Chuck. I can take him with me and have him just wait a distance away, just to be safe.
As I reach inside, I decide I will just see this through alone. I won't tell Alyssa, Chuck, Maria, or my dad. These are the people closest to me but I will hold this one to myself.
I change and head back to meet Miss Anonymous. I borrow my dad's car, as he is already at home. I just lie to him that I need a few things from the store.
I pull up at Classic Shake on time. I reach the door. Just a few people are inside. I scan the room quickly. There is one female all the way in the back, so I dare to move in that direction.
She seems to hear me closing in on her. She turns around. My jaw drops. This is unreal. My mind must be playing tricks on me. Many years have passed but I now know why the voice is familiar. I would never forget this face. I have grown to resent this face.
I turn to leave and my mother grabs my arm.
"Please, just hear me out."
"What could you possibly have to say to me that I would even want to hear?" I shot back at her.
"I know how everything appears to you. That's why I invited you here. I want to clear everything up for you. I won't take much of your time. Please, sit."
She releases my arm. I stand in place. Many emotions wash over me. How could she just show up like this? What does she even have to say? Why now? Why not just write it to me? How does she even know where I live? There is only one way to find the answers to these questions. I go to sit opposite her.
She asks if I would like anything to drink while we talk. I refuse. There is nothing that I need more than her to hurry her ass up with what she has to say.
"First, I would like to apologise. Hopefully, by the time I'm done, you will be able to accept my apology."
I remain quiet, just wanting this to be over. I can't help but feel a little nervous. She seems to understand.
"So, you know that your grandfather had great social standing. He was a senator the time your father and I met. Your father was still living at home. He was only nineteen years old when we met. We met through our fathers. They were colleagues. To make a long story short, your father was already in love with another woman. He was in love with their 20 year old maid, Maria..."
What the fuck?! My dad was in love with another woman? Maria? Which Maria? My Maria? She has been their maid even then? I am interrupted from my thoughts as my mother continues with her story.
"He and I developed a friendship. It had always been platonic. I never pursued anything more with him, because he had already made it clear how he felt about Maria. One day, his father caught him with the maid. All hell broke loose. He was shocked and appalled by his behavior. He thought that would drag his name through the gutter for his son to be with the maid. He threatened to disown him and forbade your father seeing Maria. Needless to say, Maria got fired. Your father was torn up. He wasn't even given time to heal when our parents decided that we should be together. I went with it only because I understood what your father was going through. I knew his pain. I comforted him through his pain. Time passed and we got married. We hired Maria back as our maid. We had moved a few hours away, so your grandfather knew nothing of it. I agreed for her to work for us. I knew that your father would feel much better that way. About two years in our living arrangements, Maria became pregnant. It was pretty obvious who the father was. I knew they were having sex with each other, but who am I to break up what they had? Your father was torn apart yet again. I agreed that they should keep the child. I informed our parents that I was pregnant. We agreed that Maria would give birth and I would claim the child. Nine months later, Maria gave birth to one of the most beautiful little girls I have ever laid eyes on. I fell in love with you instantly. I knew that I could always love you and treat you as if you were my own. I did just that until I met and fell in love with my husband. I wanted to stay for your sake, as well as your father's, but I wanted to live for me finally. I made one of the most difficult decisions anyone could. I left one day without informing anyone. I couldn't take you with me. I would never hurt Maria and your father that way. It was just time for me to be free. Also, it would give your father no option, but to do the right thing... "
I can't believe all I am hearing.
Apparently, he still hasn't done the right thing when it comes to me. I was made to believe my mother abandoned me when all this time I have been living with my biological mother. I am being lied to even up to this present moment. I don't know what to feel. I feel the tears hot on my cheeks. I feel so hurt. I feel angry. I feel confused. I stand and without even saying goodbye, I walk out of the Classic Shake.
