"All costumers please make your way to the front checkout with your items, the store is closing in two minutes."
I stuffed another pack of Oreos into my backpack before zipping it shut and tossing it over my back.
I made my way to the cash register and emptied my basket full of Mr.Noodles onto the conveyor belt. Someone came up behind me and doing the polite thing, I put a divider behind my stuff.
"Thank you." a mans deep voice sounded from behind me and I looked back at him with a smile.
"You're welcome." I noticed he only placed a pack of gum from the stacks of treats near the cash. I also took note of what he was wearing.
He wore some sketchers, gray jogging pants and a black sweater that covered his face. I took a look at his hands before he shoved them into his pockets, they looked rough and had tar scarred skin.
"Your total comes up to $20.25."
I handed over my twenty dollar bill hoping the cashier would let me slide with 25 cents short.
But she didn't, she looked at me with an expectant look on her face, "You're missing 25 cents."
I didn't even know what to do. It was only 25 cents off...
I just stood there looking back at her.
The man behind me stepped in and handed her his pack of gum, "She's with me." Before taking out a twenty dollar bill.
The cashiers eyebrows shot up and she eyed me. It was obvious what she was thinking. She scanned the item, "Bags?"
The man turned to me.
"Uh yeah." I said.
The cashier aggressively ripped a bag and tossed it onto the other conveyor belts, "Your total comes up to $24.10." She spat.
What the hell was her problem???
I gave her a puzzled look and moved over to pack my things.
The man behind me handed her a twenty and she opened the cashier to give him the change when he held a hand up, motioning for her to keep the change.
Instead of putting it in the register, she looked around before pocketing it.
I didn't waste any time as I tossed the last pack of noodles into the plastic bag and skirt, skirted, out of there.
When I got outside the store the sky had already gotten dark. I fished my phone out of my pocket and looked at the time, it was 9:05 and the bus had stopped running (at least in this area) five minutes ago.
It took me half an hour by city bus to get to Toni's house, and my only option now was to walk. Who knew how long it would've taken for me to walk.
I shifted and crossed the street to walk on the sidewalk.
This area has to be twice as sketchy as Albany Avenue. The people here had to be rough, judging from the aggressive cashier. But maybe they were mysterious and nice like the unknown man behind me.
I took my earphones out of my pocket and plugged in my phone before putting my playlist on shuffle.
Idontwannabeyouanymore by Billie Eilish started to play.
(A/N: You can start listening to the music now.)
I walked past a couple of abandoned apartment buildings. I remember as a kid, this area used to filled with people. It was the most packed place in the city. Everyone wanted to live here.
