Banks are supposed to be run by smart people, right? Makes sense, after all money is pretty damn important. So when dumb stuff like this happens it makes me wonder about the fundamental back office foundations supporting the modern economy.
A client wrote to us requesting to cancel a recurring monthly payment. They helpfully attached a color photocopy of the original instruction. Our staff obviously didn't read and blindly executed the instruction again. When the client complained they had been debited twice they were told 'the color copy was very real'. The client's lawyer wrote to us saying 'In decades of legal practice they have never come across such a ridiculous explanation.'
In all honesty I had to agree.
