Mariah's POV

"Rye, you're going to be late for work," my Mom yelled from the bottom of the stairs. "I'm on my way down; I'm just grabbing my keys."

I have never been late for work, but this time I will be cutting it close. I don't know why I let Lacey talk me into going out to find cupcakes last night. Who eats cupcakes at 3 in the morning?

Lacey Hawthorne is my best friend. When I say best friend, I truly mean it. Our friendship isn't one of those artificial friendships formed because we were in the same grade and liked similar things. It's a bit more special than that.

My mom and Lacey's mom
met on June 4, 1999. They were at Glenn Oaks Medical Center. Both of them had their baby on this day, and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

"Rye, you are forgetting your jacket," my mom yelled, as I was on my way out the door.

"Thanks Mom, love you Mom," I tell her as I grab my jacket and head out the door.

It's fifteen minutes from the house to my job. I step into my Jeep and hope that all the lights are green.

Five minutes late.

I was five minutes late.

Lacey looked at me and pointed to the counter in the back office. On the counter was my breakfast, a sausage and egg Mcgriddle. Those things are just a little piece of heaven.

"Forgot your breakfast again I see," Lacey said with a knowing smirk on her face. "It's your fault," I replied. Sometimes working with your best friend early in the morning wasn't a good idea. She already knows that we cannot talk before coffee. I'm likely to either not reply at all, or reply with extreme sarcasm. It's a good thing that designing my own clothes always put me in a good mood.

Lacey and I put our college savings together to rent out an office space. It's not really big, but it fits our needs. I was always told that I was a dreamer, that I would never be able to design my own clothing brand, let alone open my own store.

I only have one question for these people, "What do you have to say now?"

I pulled out a roll of black and white striped fabric and my sketchbook. Today was the day; I was finally going to make The Dress.
