47. RAINY CITY
雨の多い都市

THE SYMPHONY OF honks on the busy road only made jungkook's anxiety worse. he pulled his bottom lip between his teeth, knee jerking restlessly, eyes staring out to see if the traffic was moving up.

unable to sit still, he kept fidgeting, his entire body moving in some way or the other. his eyes kept moving to his watch, checking the time constantly. his heart was racing with the fear that her plane might leave before he ever got there.

he'd been trying to call her, but all he got was her voicemail. even if her phone was on, his gut told him she probably wouldn't pick up if she saw his name. but it didn't stop him from trying. he'd do anything to reach her right now.

"oh heavens," he muttered, letting out a shaky breath. he didn't want to imagine losing her forever. once she got on that plane, it would probably be over for him. aaliyah would make herself completely forget him. he knew. and it scared the living daylights out of him.

the skies darkened from a serene blue to a threatening grey, warning of an oncoming storm. jungkook's brows furrowed in perplexity at the sudden change in weather.

his eyes shut in frustration as he realised the storm was only going to make things worse. it was almost like the forces were coming together to keep him from fixing his mistake. as the rain began to fall mercilessly, jungkook stuck his head out the window in an attempt to see if the horrible traffic would let up anytime soon.

he had to blink repeatedly to keep the rain from getting into his eyes. pulling his head back in, he ran a hand over his now damp hair. there was no way he was going to make it to the airport in time if he sat in the taxi waiting for traffic to clear up.

pressing his lips into a thin line, jungkook's mind was whirling in contemplation. he made his decision. nothing was going to stop him. pulling a note out of his wallet hurriedly, he handed it to the taxi driver. the man shot him a questioning look that jungkook ignored. he wouldn't understand.

shutting his eyes, he took a deep breath and opened the door. quickly, he stepped out into the rain, shutting the door behind him.

the rain instantly beat down on him once he was out of the protection of the car. it didn't really matter to him. all he could think about in that moment was lia and making it to her in time before he lost his chance forever.

his feet began to move, almost of their own accord, even as the rain fogged his glasses and vision. the chill of the wind dancing around with the cold torrents wrapped around him, finding its way through his body and right to his bones. it was enough to make anyone stop, but his desperation spurred him on.

jungkook ran. he ran like his life depended on it, which in the circumstances, he felt that it did. cold lips moved in a never-ending mumbling of prayers, sneakers clad feet splashing puddles of water onto his already wet jeans.

rain poured down in torrents, blurring his vision as he weaved his way through the streets of milwaukee. it was so dark out, it might as well have been seven pm rather than three in the afternoon. it was almost as though the gods themselves were mad at jungkook as well.

"i fucked up. i know." he muttered, glancing up at the tumultuously grey skies that shadowed everything. it reflected the state his mind was in. clouded, muddled, roaring.

he caught his reflection on the side of a glass building as he ran past it. his wet hair was matted to his scalp, white t-shirt stuck to his torso like a second skin, body glistening with water. every muscle in his body was tense. his looks were, however, the least of his problems at the moment.

he kept running, hearing and feeling everything at hypersensitivity. the loud and unsteady beating of his heart, his racing pulse, the breaths that left his lips in shaky puffs. in the hurricane that his mind had become, only one thing stood out. and he focused all his energy on it.

he had to get to the airport. he had to get to her.

☀️☀️☀️

super early update because i've had this chapter in my drafts since the beginning! honestly it should have been published yesterday with the last chapter but i needed to go through it one last time to make sure it worked well. i'm sure y'all recognise the second half of this chapter (if you don't, check out the prologue, 00 again to refresh your memory). it was the first piece of this story i ever wrote. the first half went through a lot of changes and rewriting because i needed it to flow into the second half perfectly before finally settling on this.
it might take a while for the next one to be up so enjoy this for now sjsjs.
anyways, 3 to go!
