"Come on Antpaw, it's just a tree. You can climb it," Finchwing mewed to her apprentice. The frightened ginger tom shook his head, quivering.
"It's too high! What if I fall?" he squeaked. Duskfern walked up to him, licking the top of his head.
"Sorrelpaw is doing fine. Look, she's not even close to falling. We'll be right here," she meowed comfortingly. Antpaw let out a sigh, still shaking slightly. He approached the tree, looking up to where Sorrelpaw was climbing. She looked back at him, purring.
"You got this, Antpaw! Just sink your claws in!" she called cheerfully. He gulped, and hesitantly placed his front paws on the wood. He felt a light nudge on his back, as Flamepool nudged him supportively up to a branch. The clan watched as the small tom pulled himself up, and poked his head out of the leaves.
"I did it!" he squeaked happily, looking down on the rest of the cats.
"Great job, little brother!" Brindlebreeze meowed, excited for him. Patchpelt shrugged, tail twitching.
"When I was his age, I could climb to the very top, easy," the black and white tom boasted. Dovecloud glared at him, tail lashing.
"Be quiet, Patchpelt. No one cares," she spat, before looking up at the two apprentices. Her face softened, and she watched them climb higher. "You're both doing great!". Brambleshade was in the top of the tree, as the marker for when they could stop. Sorrelpaw reached the top first, and cheered.
"I won! I won!" she announced. Antpaw reached the top soon afterwards, and the three cats returned to the ground.
"Good job, both of you," Flamepool purred, nudging his kits with his nose. "You'll both grow up to be fantastic warriors".
"I definitely agree with that," Brambleshade mewed, nodding. He looked down proudly at Sorrelpaw, then motioned for her to follow him. "Now come on, let's go train". The cats dispersed, ready to continue on with their day.

Duskfern padded over to Sorrelpaw and Antpaw, carrying two mice. She set one down in front of each of them, and sat down.
"I'm so proud of both of you! You're doing great in training," she mewed happily. Sorrelpaw dug into her mouse happily, as Antpaw looked up at their mother. His eyes glinted happily, as he bounced up and down.
"It's so much fun!" he squeaked. Suddenly, a coughing sound came from Sorrelpaw. Antpaw looked over, disturbed. She started foaming at the mouth, and convulsing. Duskfern let out a cry, and the rest of the cats ran over.
"Someone help her!" Flamepool yowled, kneeling down beside the small she-cat. Finchwing pulled Antpaw back, not wanting him to watch.
"Look away, Antpaw. Sorrelpaw will be fine," she mewed quietly, although she wasn't so sure. Suddenly, Sorrelpaw stopped moving, eyes open and lifeless.
"No! Sorrelpaw, wake up!" Brindlebreeze cried, nudging the small apprentice's body. Dovecloud looked horrified, shaking her head.
"Who would kill a kit? She was only six moons old," the she-cat murmured. Brambleshade pushed his way through, rolling the mouse over. He revealed red berries glistening in its stomach, where Sorrelpaw had taken a bite.
"Deathberries. Someone poisoned my apprentice!" he yowled, voice full of sorrow and anger.
"Duskfern brought them the mice! What if it was her?!" Patchpelt cried. The rest of the cats looked towards the grief stricken mother, who shook her head in horror.
"No! I would never kill my kit! You, Finchwing, and Brindlebreeze were the ones on the hunting patrol! Maybe it was you, Patchpelt!" she spat, ready to lash out at him. Flamepool held her back from the tom, blocking her path.
"It could be anyone. We were all in camp at the same time," Finchwing reminded the cats. Flamepool nodded, ready to voice his agreement. But Brambleshade shook his head angrily.
"Duskfern brought her the mouse. The only mouse with deathberries. Antpaw's is clean. I agree with Patchpelt. Let's exile her!" he spat. "All in favor, raise their tails!".
