Of course, no one was exiled. Many of the cats refused to take a stance on the matter, and only a few voted guilty. The cats returned to mourning Wolf and Flock, with not even a second thought to what would happen next.
That night, amongst the sand and the rock, the murderers would kill again. Customary to tribe traditions, every cat in the tribe had to sit vigil by the side of the murdered cat. As the night went on, cats would disappear, until only the loved one remained.
It was when Hump and Hare left the vigil that the murderers chose to strike. The two brothers remained together, and headed down to the oasis to get a drink. However, two other cats secretly followed them.
"Why do you think the murderers did that?" Hare asked. He shivered, thinking of how Wolf and Flock must have felt as the claws tore their skin.
Hump looked up at the moon thoughtfully. "Well, I suppose they wanted to kill Wolf, since she's the Mudir. I bet that they're targeting the high-ranking cats, so we'll become unorganized" Hare looked at him confused, then his eyes widened.
"Wait a minute, that means they only killed Flock as a precaution, right?" he began. Hump nodded, and Hare began to back up. "Hump, the Zaeim and the Almaealij are both at the vigil. Since you're the Almaealij to-be, that means —"
A crack sounded from the nearby bushes, and the first murderer stepped out, a smirk on their face. Hare gulped, and stepped protectively in front of his brother.
"Well done, Hare. I must say, you would have made an excellent addition to the tribe," they mewed. Hare turned on his heel and tried to run, but found his path blocked by the second murderer.
Meanwhile, Hump was looking at the first murderer in horror. "It was you? Why are you doing this? I can't believe you!" The murderer rolled their eyes, and stepped forward.
"Yes, yes, I know. Don't worry, though. The others will join you soon enough" The murderer slashed their claws across Hump's neck, while their partner leapt onto Hare. When they were done, the two murderers padded away, leaving the brothers' bodies behind.

The next morning, the tribe gathered outside of the dens in order to bury Wolf and Flock. However, two cats were missing.
"Where are Hare and Hump? This is completely unacceptable behavior!" Hive declared. He huffed indignantly, and twitched his tail. "Inconceivable!"
Dune looked towards the oasis with concern. "This isn't like my sons, Hive. They wouldn't do this. What if something happened?" Scorpion padded up to Dune, lightly brushing against her.
"I can get a few cats to help me look for them, Dune," he mewed quietly. The lead tribe-guard nodded, and Scorpion flicked his tail at Hyena, Bark, Shadow, and Flower, ordering them to follow him.
Falcon and Lizard moved to gather cats for a patrol, but Buzzard shook her head. "No. If one of our own was harmed, you need to be here for the voting process" The brothers nodded, and sat patiently.
Flower returned first, out of breath from shock and the sprinting. She looked at Dune apologetically. "Hare and Hump . . . they're . . . dead" Dune let out a cry, a mix of fury and despair.
Eventually, the other four cats returned, carrying Hare and Hump together. They set the two young cats down next to Wolf and Flock silently.
Stone stood up, and leapt onto a rock, gazing out at the rest of his tribe with his one good eye. "We must vote, before we proceed with the burials," he declared. No one argued.
"I think it was Bark! We found Hare and Hump awfully quick, combined with the points made yesterday!" Shadow accused. Bark looked at Shadow, hurt, but the she-cat didn't flinch.
"Any other accusations?" Burrow asked, after a long period of silence. She was met with quiet glances. "No?"
"Well, if we must . . . maybe Gazelle? She isn't the nicest to-be," Bush mewed. The tribe accepted this, and the voting began.
