Antpaw let out a sigh of relief, as he counted the tails. "Innocent, thank StarClan". Finchwing and Brambleshade grumbled a bit, but didn't protest. Flamepool padded over to his kits, burying his nose in their fur with relief. The rest of the clan dispersed around the camp, leaving what remained of the family alone.

The murderer stood over Sorrelpaw's sleeping body, watching her chest rise and fall. They had meant to kill the she-cat again for awhile now, after she had been revived by Brindlebreeze. Failure was not an option. Slowly and carefully, they placed a paw over Sorrelpaw's throat, and pressed down. The apprentice woke up and began to struggle, but was unable to make any noise while being choked. Eventually, Sorrelpaw stopped struggling. There would be no coming back from this death.

Antpaw let out a shriek of terror, when he saw Sorrelpaw's motionless body. He ran out into the middle of the camp, panicked. "Flamepool! Flamepool, help! It's Sorrelpaw again! She was murdered!" The rest of the clan came out of the warriors' den, hearing the small ginger tom.
"Oh no, not again . . ." Dovecloud murmured, watching as Finchwing pulled Sorrelpaw out of the den. Flamepool let out a wail of pain, laying down next to her.
"My entire family . . . it's only me and you now, Antpaw," he mumbled, voice full of grief. The small ginger tom buried his face in his father's fur. Brambleshade hung his head sadly, standing next to Finchwing.
"She was too young. What kind of monster would do this?" he asked. Finchwing rested her tail comfortingly on his back, looking suspiciously at Patchpelt.
"It's only been a few moons since Patchpelt joined . . . I bet it was him!" she exclaimed. Patchpelt looked shocked, as everyone turned to look at him angrily.
"Why would I do this? This is the first place where I've felt like I belong!" he defended, fur bristling. Dovecloud seemed unsure, as she nervously shifted back and forth.
"You don't really have any connections to any of us . . . it would be easier for you to kill Sorrelpaw," she murmured. Patchpelt's expression filled with betrayal, and his gaze switched between them.
"Antpaw? Flamepool? You have to know this is crazy!" he exclaimed. Antpaw didn't respond, only looking down and shuffling his paws. Flamepool stared blankly at Patchpelt, as if he hadn't registered what the tom had said. When neither of them replied, Patchpelt turned to Brambleshade.
"Please, Brambleshade! We're friends! You know I would never do this!" he begged. The brown tom's mouth open slightly, on the verge of speaking. He glanced towards his sister, who was glaring at Patchpelt.
"I - I . . ." he trailed off, then looked down at his paws guiltily.
"We're voting. All in favor of exiling Patchpelt, raise their tales," Finchwing announced firmly.
