Pansypaw, of course, was voted innocent. None of the cats were surprised by that. She was just an apprentice, who couldn't manage to pull Petuniapaw out from under a tree. Plus, she had been heartbroken about Tansypaw's death.
The cats split up and wandered around, although a few of them had the task of burying Sagestar. The grey tom was supposed be buried next to Petuniapaw. But before the cats could go bury Sagestar, Daffodilsong ran in front of them.
"Wait!" he ordered, and knelt down in front of Sagestar. Then he looked up at the sky pleadingly. "StarClan, as the medicine cat, I beg of you, please give Sagestar another life. He was only given eight, because of the acts of our previous leader. So please, you owe him one more". The ginger cat held his breath anxiously, until a silver light began to glow around Sagestar's body. Then the tom let out a gasp, and sat up.
"Sagestar!" Lavendercloud exclaimed, burying her face in his fur. He stiffly sat up, and nuzzled his mate. Daisyshine and Asterheart went over to him as well, joyfully greeting him. However, they were the only cats there, as the rest were roaming around the forest to hunt and collect flowers for Sagestar's grave. This gave the murderer the perfect opportunity.
Iristuft was one of the cats who decided to pick flowers. Her long fur always got caught on the branches, which made hunting difficult. That was why she normally went on patrols instead, although MeadowClan had given up on those with the murderer.
As she headed to a patch of daffodils, the murderer closely followed her. Iristuft didn't even notice. Then, as the black and white she-cat leaned down to pick a flower, the murderer struck.
Iristuft was thrown into a tree, causing a loud crack to echo throughout the woods. She slid down the trunk onto the ground, and didn't get back up.
Tulipfur was the one to find her. The black she-cat let out a screech in terror, and fled back to the camp. She skidded to a stop in front of the five cats, and looked around in confusion. Then she shook her head.
"Iristuft has been killed!" Tulipfur wailed, clearly devastated. Daisyshine went to comfort her best friend, leaving Daffodilsong to take care of Sagestar and Lavendercloud and Asterheart to retrieve the body.
It took awhile before Lavendercloud and Asterheart returned with the body. By that time, all of the other cats had been collected and brought back to camp. When they set the body on the ground, Tulipfur and Lupinepaw began to sob. Fennelnose and Pansypaw went over to comfort them. Tulipfur buried her face in Fennelnose's fur, and the tabby tom's eyes widened.
"How did this happen?" Rosefern demanded. Daffodilsong went over to inspect the body, and motioned to the impact mark on the spine with his tail.
"The murderer rammed into her side, right about here, I would say. Then she was thrown back into the tree, which broke her spine," he replied calmly. Tulipfur growled, and whirled around to Violetfrost, her sister. The black she-cat's head was hung.
"Forget it! You know what? I think it was Violetfrost!" Tulipfur announced accusingly. Violetfrost looked up with surprise, then masked the expression and looked at her calmly.
"Why would I kill our mother?" Violetfrost asked, looking at Tulipfur condescendingly. This infuriated Tulipfur more, and she stepped closer to Violetfrost.
"Ambushing, especially from trees? Well, I only know one she-cat who can blend into the shadows and sleep comfortably in trees, don't you?" Tulipfur hissed mockingly. Lupinepaw looked despairingly between his sisters, unsure which one to trust.
"Very well. Tulipfur has accused Violetfrost," Sagestar declared. No one questioned his presence. They had already been told about Daffodilsong reviving him. "We shall now vote".
