Chapter 19
--Clay--
"You aren't being much help, you're just barking down my throat." I snapped at Hollis. I knew I should be more sensitive, but she was grating on my last nerves. Not to mention my hangover wasn't making things any easier.
She gasped. "Barclay! Be a little considerate. I'm pregnant and I'm in one of my moods and I have a strange craving for bok choy."
I grimaced before sorting through the dresses once again. Yeah, you read right, I'm dressing shopping. I'm dress shopping for Arden since I knew she was going to need a new dress for the wedding. Hollis was here to give me her expertise since I knew I couldn't do this alone.
But it seemed like every dress had sparkles, sequins, or fake diamonds and I knew those were the kinds of dresses Elspeth didn't like. She was more reserved and wasn't into the glitzy stuff. Instead of those bright pinks and reds, she liked pastel colors. She liked the light yellows and greens and every now and then, the dark blues. She was a complex girl.
"What about this?" Hollis asked holding up a dress with enough sparkles to blind me if put in direct sunlight.
I shook my head in panic. "Are you trying to kill me? If I forced her into that dress she'd strangle me before the night ended."
Hollis laughed. "I'm just trying to help. It's so hard to get inside of her head."
"Please try Hollis, I don't know what girls like... well I know what Elspeth doesn't like." I explained my eyes pointedly looking at the dress in Hollis' hands. She scoffed before she put it back on the rack while I kept filing through the dresses.
We had been here for over an hour and I was starting to get annoyed. I feel bad for girls who have to do this for every fancy event they decide to attend. This was torture. My hopes were about to shrivel up and die until I spotted a light green dress among the chaos.
My eyes were wide in amazement as I looked at the lace dress. The dress was a beautiful light green that I knew would make Elspeth's eyes pop and looked modest enough to her liking. The dress was embroidered with flowers and didn't hold a dot of glitter. From the length of the dress I knew it would come to the middle of her thigh. I smirked. She would be fine with showing a little bit of skin right? I thought it was perfect.
"By God, I think you've found it." Hollis smiled as she walked over to me. I nodded my approval and then checked the size. Two. Thank God.
"Alright we're getting this." I explained and then started for the front of the store, towards the cash register, but Hollis pulled me back.
"Where do you think you're going?" she asked me, her grip on my arm a little too tight for comfort.
I grimaced and pried my hand out of her hold. "I'm checking out."
She shook her head and then started to walk away, gesturing for me to follow her. "You forgot one key item."
"What's that?" I asked, my eyebrows scrunching together in confusion.
She smiled as we walked through the racks of clothes, and shopping customers. When we finally came across what she was looking for, she smirked. I scowled as I looked at the evil things. We were looking at aisles and aisles of shoes.
Hollis patted my shoulder in pity. "You can't give a girl a dress without shoes to match. Now come on Clay, we've got work to do."
I groaned as she pulled me in the fray of frantic shoe shoppers.
"Don't pick anything with a heel too high or else you'll kill her." Hollis sung as she happily looked at each shoe.
I was dying in the pastels and the sparkles. How do people survive in a world like this? The hanger in my hand was irritating me beyond belief and the way Hollis was happily skipping among the shoes and picking a few for herself was enough to make me go crazy.
