Chapter 14

My mouth dropped in shock.  Right in front of me was a small, yellowish colored dragon with tiny clear wings.  It had small scales that looked slick due to the wetness of the egg and it had bright black eyes.  He looked like the typical Dragon with horns going all the way down his back.  He was kind of small, but I knew that was because he was built for speed, but he would also have some muscle.  How I knew it was a he I had no idea.

He was looking up at me with his intelligent black eyes.  He cocked his head to the side and crawled closer to me.  He snuggled up side my leg and nudged my hand with his head.  When I continued to stare at it, he rolled his eyes and licked my hand.  He let out a little squeak and licked his lips.

“What?  I don’t have anything to eat,” he snorted and looked around.  He got up and walked over to my bag that I had dropped.  He scratched at it and looked up at me expectantly.  Then, he bit down on my hand.  “Ouch!  What was that for?” I yelled.  He snorted as I gently tried to stop the blood.  It really hurt.  “Fine!”

I rummaged through my bag and pulled out a couple of berries that I had found during a rest one day.  I tossed them to the baby Dragon and sat back.  He quickly gobbled up the food and looked back at me.  “No more, piggy.  I have to eat too.”  He whined but didn’t bite me again.  Instead, he snuggled back up next to me.  “Oh, no you don’t.  I have to keep moving.”  I got up and walked towards the mountains.  I already had lingered too long.

The dang rock the man had given me was an egg.  I couldn’t believe it.  All of this time I had been carrying around an egg for a man that I didn’t even know.  That was a punishable offense!  The Council had ruled that all Dragon eggs must be turned in to an Academy to find the Dragon’s Rider.  Anyone caught hiding eggs could go to jail for years.

I turned back when the Dragon started to cry.  “Go!  You just hatched so your master must be close by.  I’m not in charge of you.  I have my own problems, like trying not to be a human punching bag.”  The Dragon ran up to me and spread his wings.  The only problem was he wasn’t used to flying, so it was more like being hit by a rock as he flung himself at me.

You!  A voice that was clearly not my conscious said.  I looked around.

“Hello?  Is anyone there?” The Dragon rolled his eyes.

We go. The voice said weakly.  I looked down at the little Dragon.

“I have your Dragon here!” I called into the trees.

Listen! We go! I looked at the Dragon.

“Wait, are you…you can’t be!  You’re my Dragon, aren’t you?”

Duh. It said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“But how?  You were with me the whole time!  Why wouldn’t you hatch earlier!  It could have saved me so much trouble!”  I was close to tears by the end.  If this truly was my Dragon, then it should have hatched the moment I made contact with the egg.  Even with all of the dirt on the egg, my Dragon should have recognized me.  “Besides, how can you talk to me?  It should take months to years before we are able to communicate mentally.”

Hard.  Hungry. He said while licking his lips.

“I’ll tell you what.  Once we get to the mountains, I’ll try to find us some food.  Got it?” He nodded and then crawled into my bag.  “Great.  So now I have to carry you too?”

Go.  They come soon.

“Aw, you just said your longest sentence.  I’m so proud of you.”
