Chapter 15

When I woke up, the note on the bedside table was gone along with the empty bowl of stew.  In its place was a new bowl with more stew and a slip of paper.  I took the paper and saw it was a note from Corbett.

“Valerie, I did not want to wake you when I left.  The stew is over the fire.  I’ll have your letter delivered to your Headmaster.  I’ll see you in a week.   Feel free to walk around, but be careful and don’t go outside.  Those chasing you will not find you as long as you stay in the house. I left you an old cane to help you get around.  Don’t you dare open your stitches.  –Corbett.”

I looked around and sure enough there was an old cane leaning against the bed.  I put the letter back on the table and poked Adonis in the belly.

“Wake up, sleepy head.  Time for breakfast.”  I scooped out the meat and tossed it to him.  He caught it in the air and groaned.

Still hungry.

“Well, let me eat first, and then I’ll find you something more.”  I quickly ate the stew and picked up the cane.  When Adonis noticed me getting up, he hopped off the bed.

What are you doing?  You’re gonna hurt yourself!

“Not if I put most of my weight on my good leg.  Besides, I need to get up some time.  I have to pee.”

So vulgar, he muttered.  I grabbed the edge of the bed and slowly swung my legs over the side of the bed.  I could see my leg was awkwardly bent and had a long line of stitches running down it.  I held onto the cane and slowly put all of my weight on my good leg.  I gradually straightened up and noticed that as long as no weight was on my bad leg, I could at least stand up.

Using the cane, I hobbled over to the door that Corbett had gone in and out of.  Adonis walked slowly behind me, watching to make sure I wouldn’t fall.  I looked back and saw that he seemed to have grown even more.  He was up to my waist and his horns had grown more.  I noticed some more spikes on his wings, and they looked almost like little grappling hooks.

Checking me out I see. He said after noticing me looking at him.  I groaned.  Val, are you okay?

“I really shouldn’t have named you Adonis.  Your ego is getting way to big.”

Why don’t you try talking to me in your mind? He asked.  I frowned.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Well, you do know that we can talk mentally.  It doesn’t take as much energy, and if we are flying, we will actually be able to hear each other.

“Well, what do I have to do?”

Just imagine that you are sending me a message and I think I’ll be able to hear them.  Maybe when we get bigger, we can read each other’s thoughts too.  I don’t know.  Corbett was talking about all the cool things that he could do with his Dragon, and they were amazing!  Not only could they read each other’s minds, but they could do that to other Dragons too and not just the messages they sent!  Like, they could go digging through someone’s minds and figure out the things they did!  I hope we have powers like that.  We would be the awesomest Warriors ever!

“Getting a little full of yourself, aren’t you?” I asked.  He snorted as I opened the door revealing a cozy little hut.  There was a simmering fireplace with a large pot over it.  There was a table with two chairs and an armchair next to the fireplace.  By the table were a bunch of cabinets that probably held utensils and more food.  There was another wooden door across from this one that I assumed was the way out.  There weren’t any windows.
