After the four peculiars escaped from Cauls fortress, he told his wights to go and search for them. So he sent a group on a mission to look around in Devil's Acre. They couldn't have gotten so far.

Caul didn't feel so good. Not just because he was half-blind now, but because his whole body was aching for some reason.
He already got the arrow out, which now lay on the ground. The arrowhead was covered in his own blood.
"Well, at least we still have two of her wards..." he said, as he slowly sat down on his throne. The other wights could clearly see that Caul was in pain.
Suddenly, a guard rushed into the big hall, breathing heavily.
"Sir...sir! They're...gone!" the wight took deep breaths between his words.
"What? Who is gone?..." Caul asked, leaning down to him slightly.
"The boy with prophetic dreams, together with this fire girl!"
Cauls eyes widened. "No...." his expression changed to a glare, and the wight began to shake a little.
"We left them there, without anyone watching over them...it was just for a short time! We were trying to help you, when this man broke in, sir!!"
The giant reached out his hand really quick, grabbing the man and said furiously: "I didn't need all of your help! Haven't I told you that there always has to be one person guarding the prisoners?!"
Caul was nearly crushing him between his fingers, but suddenly the group of wights came back from their mission- without any peculiars.
They just wanted to say something, when they saw their leader almost killing another wight. But the wights tried to ignore it and said: "We couldn't find them, sir."
Caul stared at them in disbelief. Then he dropped the little man, and approached the group.
Some of the wights, who stood at the side of the hall, wanted to rush over to the fallen wight, but didn't dare to move.
"I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!" Caul screamed, and everyone else had to cover their ears. "YOU LITTLE, USELESS-"
He stopped and tried to calm himself down. Then he sighed and looked out of the window.
"Then I have to do it myself." said Caul and in the next moment, he bursted through the wall, while the wights, who stood in front of him, quickly got out of his way.

"D-did you guys hear that?" Horace asked and looked up, when they heard a loud noise. They weren't so far away from the wights fortress. Right behind it was a forest, but it looked more like a forest in winter, without any snow. Leafless trees were everywhere, reaching out to them with their long big branches.
"Yes. We should probably go now." said Emma looking around. "There were already wights searching for us..."
Sharon was eying a tree and touched some parts of it.
"Those are some kind of scratches...." there were long scratch marks across the trees bark. "Hopefully there's no hollow around..."
With these words, everyone got nervous. They didn't have Jacob on their side right now. No one who could see those monsters, or even control them.
Suddenly, Emma wanted to change the subject. "How did you manage to save Miss Peregrine?" she asked Sharon, who then turned away from the tree.
"I shot Caul in the eye. And I might have poisoned him." he explained, while he seemed kind of proud of himself. "I dipped the arrowhead in poison. It's a really strong poison, but it will probably only weaken him a little."
When he got the poison from Desmond, he told Sharon that he is a dead man. But Sharon made it out of the fortress alive and even saved somebody.
"At least he's a little weaker now..." said Miss Peregrine, looking back at the fortress.
