As soon as I got home from practice, I rushed upstairs and opened my laptop up. Something last year had to have happened with the quarterback. Ava just blanked out whenever the quarterback was brought up. When she told me that I was quarterback a while ago, she seemed fine. The google search box popped up and I typed in "Quarterback Westview High 2013"
Many links came up. The one that caught my eye read "Eric Prestoc, quarterback for Westview High, suffers neck injury that was sadly fatal." my eyes widened. Without thinking I clicked on the link. There was a picture of him. He had blonde hair, brown eyes, and he looked pretty tall. I scrolled down to the article.
"15 year old, Eric Prestoc was steps away from Westview High history. In a split second, 17 year old Drew Smith tackled him, causing a fatal neck injury. A week later Eric was announced dead, leaving his parents mourning and girlfriend Ava Glaciers falling into a deep depression."
Ava? I reread the last sentence over and over, the words echoing in my brain. I slammed down the lid of my laptop and put my head in my hands. I looked over to Ava's room. She was watching something on her computer. I knocked at my window and her head snapped up and she half smiled.
"Ava?" I said leaning out my window.
"Yeah?" she leaned out her window and looked into my eyes.
"I'm sorry that I'm being personal, but who's Eric?" I questioned and her smile faded.
"Nobody" her voice cracked and she began to close her window.
"Ava wait, I'm sorry please.." I trailed off.
She sighed and opened her window, "He was my boyfriend for a year, then he...at one of our games, he...he died" she began to tear up. "his neck was snapped, it's just hard to hear about quarterback stuff, you know, and you're the new quarterback and I really like you." the corners of her mouth turned up and formed a faint smile.
"I really like you too Ava, and I'm sorry that I'm the quarterback. It must be really hard to have this happen." I scratched my head and looked at my hands akwardly.
"It's fine, I can deal with it."
"Ava, get dressed we're going out to dinner!" an older female voice said, her mother I assumed.
She turned around and sighed. "Well as you can see I have to go" she groaned turning back to me.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" I said already knowing the answer.
"Of course." she said giggling.
She shut her window and put her blinds down. I flopped down on my bed and looked through Twitter. I saw that Ava had just posted a selfie of her in a blue dress with her family. It was captioned "Dinner with the fam!" I liked it and then fell asleep.
