"Listen up, welcome to football tryouts. If you haven't touched a football in your life get out. If you've played for under two years stand behind me. If you were on the team last year, stand by me, and finally any newbies that aren't in a spot already, stay where you are." the coach said.

I looked around. As usual, nobody of the female species was on the field besides me. I stood beside the coach. I had been on the team in freshman year so I got to stand with the remaining team members from the previous school year. Standing beside the coach were three seniors, two juniors, and me.

"Ava!" coach boomed "take Jepson, Frank, Flint, and...hmm." he pointed his finger to Sam "and Edwards" I looked up and smiled at Sam.

"Let's go ladies, two laps around the field!" I shouted to my group as the coach assigned the other people standing next to the coach. I ran along next to Sam. "So, I'm your leader. I determine whether you make the team. Your life is in my hands Sam Edwards." I said panting.

"Damn, that's intimidating." Sam said panting as we finished the two laps.

"Okay so now that you've finished your warm up, grab a ball and a partner and throw back and forth. I'll be looking for technique." I instructed my group.

"This shit ain't right, being ordered around by a lady." one of the guys said to another.

"Fine. Is this so lady-like? 10 laps around the field and once you're done 200 push-ups. Go." I ordered him. I liked having this power. "Anybody else have an issue with me?" they all shook their heads and I saw Sam smile. "Good"

After about an hour, the guy returned from all of his laps and push-ups. Practice only lasted for another 30 minutes because these were just tryouts.

"Now we're going to scrimmage for the last bit of practice." the coach yelled. "I will assign your positions for the scrimmage only and these will have nothing to do with your final positions if you even make the team."

As usual, I was kicker. Sam played quarterback and I have to admit, he was pretty good. After the scrimmage they all went home. The guys from the previous team, the coach, and I went to a coffee place to discuss the team. The two seniors were Charles, Cameron, and Haden. The juniors were Dylan and Kyle. Then the sophomore, me. We had our discussion and then we had our team. About 50 tried out and only 27 of them made it onto the team. We all shook hands and left.
