“So where do you want to go?” Marygrace asked. She and Niall had left the warm coffee shop and were now outside on the streets of Manhattan. All of the advertisements and office buildings illuminated the night. They’d been walking aimlessly for about twenty minutes, just enjoying each other’s company.
“I don’t know,” Niall thought about it for a minute “do you like ice cream?” He’d already had dinner before he left the hotel and was craving something sweet at the moment.
“Are you kidding me?” she teased him “who doesn’t like ice cream?!” She looked at him and flashed a huge smile. Even in the night of the city, Niall couldn’t help but admire how her green eyes sparkled when she smiled.
“Then ice cream it is!” he said smiling back at her and laughing. “Lead the way!” he instructed her. The darkness of the city made it feel like midnight, but in reality it was only about eight o’clock, not that Niall cared. He wanted to be with Marygrace for as long as possible tonight. He’d waited long enough and he wanted to make the best of it.
They walked for about five more minutes until she stopped in front of a pink building. The sign above the door read “Manhattan’s Best” and had an ice-cream sundae pictured next to it. The shop was small and featured a counter where customers could sit and eat ice cream. There was also a separate register for anyone who wanted to take their ice cream to go.
“This is it,” she announced with pride. “Not many people know about it, but out of all the ice cream I’ve tasted in Manhattan, this is by far the best. Oh, and you have to try the vanilla.” They walked into the shop together.
“I don’t know about that,” it was his turn to tease her. “I’m quite the dessert expert, it’s gonna take a lot to impress me.” He winked at her. They stepped up to the counter and Niall opened his mouth to order, but was surprised when Marygrace ordered for him.
“I’ll have a chocolate cone and he’ll have a vanilla cone,” she told the employee. Marygrace looked as if there was a joke only she was in on. She laughed, “I said you had to try the vanilla and I wasn’t kidding!” He smiled at her yet again. He felt like he hadn’t been able to stop smiling since they met. So far the night had consisted on laughing, smiling, and flirting. She made him happy.
