MaryGrace and Niall sat sunken into the comfortable leather couch. Niall sat up with his back against the couch with MaryGrace laying down next to him with her legs stretched out across his lap. She was dressed in her white sweater, now complimented by a clean pair of Niall’s sweatpants that she had slipped on over her tights. Niall had insisted on her borrowing them when she’d quietly complained that her legs were cold. They were both underneath a soft green woven blanket, cuddled up together. The lights had been turned off in the main room, so the only thing illuminating the sitting area was the lights shining in through the door of the bedroom and the blue glow of the TV screen. Niall held the silver colored TV remote in his hands and was flipping through the list of movies available for rent. He held his arm up and aimed the remote at the receiver positioned just above the flatscreen television. He had his feet up on the coffee table with the blanket tucked underneath to keep warm. A chilly breeze got in through the window which was thought to have been sealed tight. Apparently, the hotel maintenance had slipped up when putting in the large windows.
“What are you in the mood for?” Niall asked, being polite and taking her into account. She looked toward the ceiling in thought and hesitated a moment before answering.
“Umm... I don’t know. Just no horror please,” she said innocently. Niall looked at her with a humorous pout.
“Why no horror?” he said being curious. “Are you scared babe?” he said leaning over, placing his arm around her, and rubbing her shoulder protectively. He pursed his lips out really far to make her laugh and kissed her on the cheek. Marygrace turned pink with laughter.
“Nah...” she said turning her eyes towards the floor with slight embarrassment. Niall laughed, too. He had still been scrolling through all of the available movies alphabetically and Marygrace turned her eyes towards the screen as they cuddled up closer under the blanket. Niall didn’t move his arm from around her. He relaxed into the couch feeling completely comfortable with her. Niall was now all the way into the “S-T-U” section of the alphabet and they still hadn’t found anything worth watching. Marygrace silently read through the titles.
“Up! I loved that movie!” she said excitedly. Niall turned to face her and raised an eyebrow humorously.
“Really? I never saw it,” he said shrugging. Marygrace dramatically dropped her jaw and gasped.
“You’ve never seen Up?!” she said pretending to be horrified. To add to the event she placed one flat palm in front of her mouth that was still wide open.
“Never had the chance,” Niall said playfully reaching out a hand and pushing her jaw closed. She laughed at him and he burst into laughter as well. After regaining her composure, she pulled a puppy dog face.
“You have to see it! It’s really cute and I love Pixar movies,” she said with genuine enthusiasm. Marygrace was truly a child at heart. Niall loved everything about her. She was silly at times and he could be the same, She knew when to be more serious and he appreciated that, and she always knew how to make him feel happy or just feel better. They were a perfect fit for each other.
“Alright, let’s watch it,” he said melting like putty in her hands. He couldn’t resist her adorable puppy dog face. Niall thought she looked too cute to say no to. Plus, he secretly adored Pixar films. Liam had made him watch all three Toy Story movies a countless number of times and Niall had once teared up watching Finding Nemo, but he tried not to tell too many people about that. Niall hit the “rent” button and the movie loaded. Marygrace tucked her head into Niall’s neck as they snuggled up next to each other and the film began.
The film opened up with a little boy who meets his new neighbor Ellie. The movie showed them becoming friends and eventually falling in love and getting married. The montage of their relationship took a turn for the worst as depressing music was played behind the cartoon. A tear slowly dripped down Marygrace’s face as the montage continues. Niall’s mouth turned to a frown, having not expected the movie to be so sad. He and Marygrace made eye contact, both taking in each other’s sad expressions. Marygrace’s eyes were watery, but she wasn’t full-on crying. Niall gave her a supportive squeeze in an effort to console her.
“Gets me everytime,” she said wiping a under her eyes and laughing. Niall laughed, too. Niall laced his fingers through hers under the warm blanket. They both smiled at each other and looked back at the movie, once the upsetting montage had finished. The movie continued on as Carl, the old man, attached balloons to his house and escaped the annoyances of everyday life. New characters were introduced, with Niall laughing at the silly Dog named Doug and all of his comments. Marygrace giggled as Russel, a young boy, got on Carl’s nerves. All in all, the movie was very entertaining and they both enjoyed watching it.
Towards the end of the film, Niall stopped paying attention for a bit. His thoughts strayed to the girl sitting right beside him, the girl who’s hands he was intertwined with, the girl he had his arm around. Once again, he wondered what he would do without her. He’d never in his life been in a long distance relationship. He thought about what it would be like to not be with her for Christmas, that he might miss sharing their first Valentine’s Day together, would he miss her birthday in July? Nothing was certain, only the current moment they shared. Niall shifted his focus back to the movie playing in front of his and his girlfriend. He pulled her head close gently planting a kiss directly on the top of her head in a protective manner. He felt her soft silky blonde hair brush across his pink lips as he drew back. She turned, looking up at him and seeking some sort of explanation, not that she didn’t enjoy the surprise kisses.
“Can we just stay like this forever?” he whispered sincerely, with the slightest twinkle in his eye.
