Niall stood in front of the mirror, taking one last look at himself. He wore white high-top sneakers and maroon colored pants paired with an off-white Jack Wills long-sleeved shirt underneath his sweatshirt and jacket. To keep warm, he’d also thrown on a gray scarf. It was freezing outside; the temperature was only about 30 degrees. He’d done his best to dress casual but, clean to make a good first impression. He considered putting on cologne but, he didn’t want to come off as someone who tried too hard. As for Marygrace, he’d tried not to get too excited and attempted keeping his expectations low. After all, they’d only talked online and people were not always what they seemed, including Niall. He worried if she’d be angry that he’d given a fake name and hadn’t told her who he really was.
In an attempt to stay low key, Niall put on a charcoal colored beanie and used his scarf to cover up his face. He’d also stuck a pair of Ray-Bans in his pocket, just in case he’d need to disguise himself even more. Along with the sunglasses, he also shoved his Blackberry, room key, and wallet into his pocket. He made sure his phone had a full charge just in case he got into trouble and needed to call someone. Niall left his hotel room, making sure the door had locked and stopped by Liam’s for a minute. He knocked on the door and heard Danielle ask Liam if he could get the door. A few seconds later, Niall was greeted by Liam’s warm smile.
Liam had gotten dressed to go out, too. He wore a long sleeved blue Polo with a white collar along with a pair of tailored chinos and dress shoes. Niall could hear the sound of the blow dryer running in the other room.
“Hey Liam! Just needed to talk to you for a minute.” Niall said. Liam smiled at Niall and was about to reply but, Danielle spoked first.
“Hi Niall!” he heard her say excitedly “I’ll be there in a minute, I’m just drying my hair.” Danielle hadn’t seen Liam or the rest of the band for more than a month and was clearly happy to be in New York with the boy she loved.
“Don’t worry about it, take your time.” Niall replied.
“So, what did you need?” Liam questioned. Niall motioned for Liam to come out into the hallway with him so that they could talk in private. “Give me a second, babe! I’ll be in the hallway. I have to talk with Niall.” Liam checked his pocket to make sure he had his room key with him. He then exited the room with Niall and stood in the hallway.
“I just wanted to let you know that I’m going to meet Marygrace now. I’m sneaking out, I don’t want security with me.” Niall said, absolutely sure of his decision. He wanted to meet Marygrace on his own terms and didn’t want to make their date awkward.
“Alright, I don’t think this is a good idea but, it’s your decision. You have your phone?” Liam questioned. He often worried about the other lads in the band and was concerned for Niall’s safety.
“Yup,” Niall nodded reassuringly.
“I hope she’s your dream girl, Nialler. Just don’t get your hopes up too high!” Liam said, looking out for one of his best friends.
“Thanks Liam! I’ll be fine, have fun with Danielle,” Niall smiled and winked. He waved goodbye and started walking down the hallway, headed for the elevator. Once he reached the lobby, Niall made sure to take the back exit to avoid the Directioners out front who would surely recognize him, no matter how much he disguised himself. When he walked out the door, the freezing cold city air hit him like a brick wall. He fixed his scarf not just to make sure it covered his face, he didn’t want to get sick, especially not before playing Madison Square Garden. He began walking through the city streets while trying to remain low-key. It was actually going pretty well. There were so many people in the city and on the streets that even if he were to wear his sunglasses at night, no one would give him a second look.
Niall reached the street corner and stuck his hand in the air to hail a cab. It took a few minutes but, when one finally came, he kindly gave the driver the address that Marygrace had texted him. He’d googled it earlier that morning and it was about twenty minutes from the London Hotel. Niall pulled his Blackberry out of his pocket and checked his email. No new emails from Marygrace. He then used his time to check his twitter mentions. They were filled with hundreds of messages: some funny, most sweet, and only a few messages from haters. He then tweeted “Freezing in New York tonight, trying to stay inside haha , how’s everyone?” in an attempt to convince any fans in the city that he wouldn’t be going out. The last thing he wanted tonight was to be chased by fans. For the rest of the ride, Niall leaned his head on the seat of the cab and closed his eyes for a few minutes, trying to calm his nerves. There were just so many things that could go wrong tonight.
