Shawn's POV

It's been about a week since Skai and I met and we've only been growing closer. I can't say the same thing about her mother. Beyoncé basically pretends that we're strangers that just happen to have a kid together - she'll only really talk to me when it's something related to Skai. Shit is frustrating. But like I said, ima give her some space for a little bit and work on my relationship with Skai, then we'll see what happens.

My phone started buzzing in my pocket and I smiled when I pulled it out and saw Bey was calling me.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Hi, I wanna talk you to about Skai's birthday party," she said.

See? Not even a 'how are you?' Now I definitely don't mind talking about Skai, but does she have to be so cold?

Before waiting for me to respond she said, "She thinks that I'm just taking her and her best friend, Jayka, out to dinner next Saturday at this restaurant she picked downtown, but I'm really throwing a huge sweet sixteen surprise party for her."

I smiled, Skai is gonna love that. "That sounds great, just send me the time and address and I'll be there. Let me know if there's anything you need help with too for the party."

"Thanks, I got it though. Just make sure you don't give the surprise away when you talk to her."

I rolled my eyes, "Yeah I can handle that."

"Ok bye Sha-"

"Wait," I cut her off. "You know how Skai like realllllllly loves Rihanna?"

Beyoncé actually laughed a little, "Love might be an understatement. I hear Rihanna music 24/7. She calls herself part of some Rihanna military or something."

I chuckled, "It's Rihanna Navy, but anyway, you know she's on my label, Roc Nation, and Rih's like a little sister to me. What do you think about me asking her to stop by Skai's party for a little?"

"Shawn I don't want you to think you have to make up for lost time with these extravagant gestures and material-"

"Bey, it's nothing like that. I wanna see my daughter happy and I think she would like this."

Beyoncé was silent for a second.

"She would really love that. Thank you."

I smiled. "You're welcome."

"Alright I have to go, bye," she said abruptly and hung up before I could respond. I rolled my eyes. Give her space, I reminded myself.

1 week later, Skai's POV

It's been two weeks now since I met my dad and I couldn't be happier. We've already spent a lot of time together and we talk on the phone almost daily. I can tell that he's happy to be a part of my life now too, which warms my heart.

Things between my mom and dad though have not been great. My mom never lets her issues with my dad get in the way of me spending time with him, and they never say anything bad about each other in front of me, which is good, but when they're in the same room together it's awkward AF. I honestly don't even think my dad has an issue with my mom, he'll be nice but my mom is so cold to him. I'd never call her Pettyoncé to her face, but she can definitely be petty and stubborn when she wants to be.

Anyway, tonight my mom is taking me and Jayka out for dinner for my sixteenth birthday. I thought I was asking for a lot by asking to meet my dad, so I didn't ask for anything crazy like a party or something, just dinner with my parents and best friend is enough.
