Skai's POV
I looked in the mirror analyzing every aspect of my appearance. Jayson is coming over to have dinner with me and my parents tonight since they insisted on meeting him before officially agreeing to let me go to prom with him. I don't know why I'm freaking out so much right now, I used to see him every day at school and not really overthink it too much. But now I was overthinking everything. It's different now that I know he thinks of me as more than a friend/math tutor.
I smiled, satisfied with how I looked and headed out of my room.
"Okay, mom, dad," I said addressing my parents, "Please, please, please be cool tonight, okay?"
My mom didn't answer, she just gave my dad a look that matched the look I was currently giving him.
"What?" He shrugged. "Ima be cool, Ima talk to him, Ima ask him some questions...but Ima be cool."
I sighed, "I'm serious, dad. Please don't embarrass me." I gave him a pout and some puppy dog eyes.
He just shook his head, "No promises."
Before I even had time to roll my eyes, the doorbell rang and I knew Jayson was here. I blew out a deep breath. "Okay, I'll get the door."
I turned and ran downstairs to get the door. I opened the door and smiled when I saw him holding a box and a bouquet of flowers.
"Hi," I said.
"Hey, beautiful," he said smoothly. "These are for you." He handed me the flowers.
"Jayson, you didn't have to do that, these are so beautiful!" I gave him a hug and he softly kissed me on the cheek.
"I know, but I wanted to."
I smiled. "Ok, you ready to do this?"
"I guess I don't have any choice now, huh?"
I playfully rolled my eyes and took his hand to lead him up the stairs. "Come on, you're gonna be fine."
"Ok, mom, dad, this is Jayson."
"Hi, Jayson, you can call me Beyoncé, or Bey," my mom said sticking out her hand for him to shake. She was always having my friends call her by her first name. She said she thinks Ms. Knowles sounds too formal.
"Oh, so we doing the first name thing?" Shawn asked my mom.
"Shawn," she said through her teeth and nudged him in the side.
"Hey, I'm cool, just making sure. I'm Shawn," he said turning his attention to Jayson and shaking his hand.
"Nice to meet you both," Jayson said smiling, "I brought some cupcakes over from this bakery near our school that Skai always talks about," he said handing the box of cupcakes to my mom.
"That is so thoughtful of you, thank you," my mom said genuinely, taking the cupcakes. I smiled, knowing he was winning her over already.
"Dinner will be ready in just a few minutes, can I get you anything to drink, Jayson?" my mom asked.
"Um, just water would be great, thank you."
"Hey Jayson, let's talk for a second before we eat," my dad said and I groaned internally.
"Before you do that, Shawn can I talk to you for a second?" my mom said and I silently thanked God. Hopefully she would say something to get Jayson out of a one-on-one interrogation with my father.
Shawn's POV
"Yes, Bey?" I said to Beyoncé once she pulled me aside.
"Look, Shawn, don't be an asshole for no reason, ok? He seems like a very nice young man, don't make this a bigger deal than it needs to be."
"She's my daughter, what we're not gonna do is let her run around with some guy before properly vetting him."
She rolled her eyes. "I understand, just, go easy on him, ok?"
I shrugged. "I'll try."
She gave me a small smile, "That's all I ask."
"Come here," I said pulling her close to me and giving her a kiss. "I love you."
"I love you too. And be nice to him," she said before returning to the kitchen. I shook my head as I went back over to Jayson. We went into the living room while Bey and Skai got stuff ready in the kitchen and he sat down on the couch across from me.
"So, Jayson. Tell me about yourself, and most importantly your sudden interest in my daughter."
He chucked nervously. "Well, sir, I've known Skai since the beginning of the school year when we were put into the same math class. I know I'm a senior, but as you know, your daughter is incredibly smart so she's in the senior's math class. We ended up sitting near each other and I would ask her to help me with stuff I didn't get. Math has never been my best subject, but I work so hard to do well in school so I can be the first person in my family to go to school and become an English teacher. My mom is a single mother and doesn't make too much money, plus I got two little siblings she's gotta take care of, so I knew I had to get an amazing scholarship, or I had no chance of going to college. Anyway, so Skai started helping me out. We'd work together on group projects and she'd help me study for tests. And over time, I started to notice that she's not just incredibly smart, she's also funny, and kind, and selfless, and beautiful, and I wanted her to be more to me than just a math partner."
I nodded thoughtfully. He had honestly surprised and impressed me with his answer. "I'm impressed, it sounds like you rehearsed this," I said chuckling.
He smiled, "Well, Skai did tell me that you'd probably interrogate me, so I figured I should have something prepared. But it's all true."
I nodded. "Look, you seem like a good guy, and I trust that you'll take care of Skai at the prom. But I'ma just warn you from the jump, I'm down to do jail time over my daughter if it comes down to it, so let me not find out that you played her or anything," I said sternly.
He nodded. "I would never intentionally hurt Skai, I really care about her."
"Alright, then. Let's go eat."
