The sunset shined through my kitchen window as I was finishing cleaning up the house, Gabe was on the livingroom floor playing with his toys. I had the record player playing softly in the dining area and hummed along as I mopped the floor. A knock on my front door nearly made the whole rickety house shake, I looked up and furrowed my eyebrows. I wasn't expecting visitors. I walked over to the door and opened it to see the only familiar face I had in this town. He smiled, "Hey, Doll."

I smiled back, "Hey, Texas."

"I had some free time on my hands and wondered if you wanted to get some burgers or something." Dallas offered

"Oh uh..." I was honestly surprised by the offer, I wasn't expecting a dinner invitation at the moment. I looked behind me at Gabe, who was still occupied with his toys. I turned back to Dallas, "Unless little one can come with I don't think so, Dal."

"Oh that's fine. We don't need to go anywhere." Dallas said. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and Dallas pulled a bag of burger king from behind his back. He smiled at me and I laughed, "You came prepared."

"I wasn't taking no for an answer." Dallas joked

I chuckled, "Come on in."

I invited Dallas inside and he set the bag of burgers on the table, "I got 4 burgers because I was hungry and I didn't know how hungry you were, I also got an order of fries because I didn't know if Gabriel could even eat anything from Burger King and fries seemed like a good choice."

I picked Gabe up from the livingroom floor and smiled, "Thank you, Dallas. That was very thoughtful of you."

"No problem." Dallas smiled back, unwrapping a burger

I sat Gabe in his high chair and reached for the fries. They weren't too hot and I heard french fries were my favorite as a baby so they're most likely safe. Nothing wrong with a little fast food now and then. I set some on the tray of the high chair and sat next to Gabe, grabbing a burger for myself. "Thank you, Texas." I thanked again

"No worries, Calico." Dallas replied. He sat across the table from Gabe and watched him, I decided to watch too. Sometimes it was mesmerizing just to watch him function. So small and innocent, just learning how to perform simple tasks and being fascinated by everyday things.

Gabe picked up a fry and started chewing it, he seemed to like it. "Is it good, Bubba?" I smiled

Gabe nodded, he wasn't very verbal. I was told not to worry about it, some even said it was a good thing. He isn't mute, he's just quiet. He knows the basic "no" "yes" "mom" and the rest that 18 month old babies know, he just chooses not to talk much. I wonder if that'll change.
