Adam and Jeff are friends now, Elsa and I are friends now, and Akshay and Irene are almost together. What else? Akshay and Adam won the lucky draw resulting in all of us having two huge food hampers, and a huge bag of colored rubber bands. Why? I don’t know either. All of the students who were at the dance stood together in a huge group and snapped picture for the school newspaper. The time was still 11.30pm so my curfew ends in about half hour. Adam decided we stay in for some more champagne and snacks as if we were all not drunk enough. Adam couldn’t even walk in a straight line and he constantly kept his hands on Elsa to keep himself steady. But I wouldn’t say I won’t drink either. Today is the day everything is actually falling into place. My best friend for so many years is my boyfriend, my ex enemy is my best friend; my bully is my best friend and another two friends out of nowhere. There isn’t a better time to celebrate with some champagne and deep fried prawn wontons and chicken pop tarts. Half the crowd left because their curfew was an hour ago.
“I love you babyyyyyy!” Jeff slurred, his system intoxicated with alcohol. He hugged me from the side-no it was more like clinging on to me. I giggled and pecked him on the cheek and tousled his hair. Everyone at the table laughed and continued gossiping about god knows what. I checked my cell phone for the first time after coming here. 2 missed calls and one text message from my mom.
*Just checking on you. Everything is OK right? You can come a little pass midnight. Not more than half hour, OK? Hope you have fun! Xoxo *
It read. And I replied her I have some good news for her.
*********
We bid farewell to each other and exchanged drunks hugs and friendly pecks on the cheeks. Jeff and I walked together in silence to our car. “Did you have fun today?” he asked, looking down. I intertwined my fingers with his and said, “I had the best day of my life, okay? And I’m beyond words to say how happy I am for everything that happened today. I promise, okay?” I said and kissed his knuckles. He pulled me closer to him, and hung his arms around my shoulder and smiled. We sat in the car in silence, I fiddled my fingers on my lap. “You okay?” he asked and I replied saying yes and that I was just drunk. He smiled and brought the engine to life.
The ride back home was just Jeff singing along to the songs on the radio and me taking a few- no a lot of pictures with Jeff. Half the way back home, I dozed off and Jeff was still singing. He shook me a little and my eyes shot open, suddenly scared. “Hey, its okay we’re home that’s all,” he said and rubbed the back of my hands. I let out a breath of relief and got down his car and he tagged along to the door. “Tonight was fun. Thank you so much for everything,” I kissed his knuckles again and thanked him. “No, thank you. I love you much Layla, I’d say that to you all night if you want me to,” he said and cupped my face in his sweaty hands. He crashed his lips with mine and I could taste the alcohol in his mouth. The kiss didn’t last more than 10 seconds or so. “I’d kiss you longer, but I’m drunk and you’re making my hormones go crazy. I’ll see you tomorrow. I love you,” he said and kissed me one last time before leaving. He turned away to his car and I called him. “Jeff, are you sure you want to drive alone when it’s dark and you’re dark?” I asked him. I might have sounded like I’m taking concern over him. But that wasn’t exactly why I asked him. I wanted him to stay a while longer, or if possible stay in for the night. He looked back at his car, and the back at me, and threw his keys in his pockets and removed his tuxedo. “I’m staying in tonight, come on,” he said and rung the doorbell. I smiled at myself proudly and the door swung open, revealing my mother in her PJ’s grinning at the both of us widely. Great! I have a huge long explanation to do to my mom tonight, make that tomorrow. “Hi Mom. Jeff is drunk, he’s staying in tonight. And I’ll tell you the story tomorrow, promise. I’m tired and drunk,” I told her and kissed her on the cheek. Her face fell when I said ‘I’ll talk to you tomorrow’ because she obviously knew something and wanted to confirm it. Well, she has to wait. I dragged a sleepy and drunk Jeff upstairs and shut the door.
