On the ride back home, we decided to make a quick stop at One’s Stationery to get some art supplies to finish our posters to put up on the church for the WORLD HUNGER GATHERING, next month. “So you’re coming with me, right?” Jeff asked.
“Where?”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“I’m not. Where?”
“The Dance Lay, the dance.”
“Oh” I simply said.
“What do you mean by oh?” he said, ready to pounce on me.
“I guess, I’m coming”
“Yeah, you’ve got anything to wear?”
“I’d stick with the pink button up dress I wore to church last week.”
“Oh God, Layla. No. You don’t wear button ups to Dance nights. We’ll get you something.” he said, his hand on his temples when I mentioned the pink dress. I wasn’t going to wear that anyway.
I shook my head. We reached my driveway in a few moments of silence. I got out of my car, my hands full of plastic bags, with paint and plain white banners. Jeff, helped me with my school bag and binder. He walked straight to my room, after waving to my mom with a huge grin on his face.
My mom was very fond of Jeff. She secretly hopes we get together. But even more secretly, I wish for the same. I shut my room door and placed the bags on my bed and stretched.
“Layla, honey. Can you open the door?” mom called from outside my door. I opened it and she walked in with a tray full of chocolate chip cupcakes and a large-ish jar of cold, fresh milk and two glasses. I helped her with the jug and glasses and placed it on the floor. “This is for you both,” she said smiling. By the time I returned her smile, she shut my room door and was on her way down.”THANK YOU VERONICAAA!!” Jeff shouted behind me. I stared at him and he said “And that’s how you do it when you don’t have a chance to thank people just yet.” I rolled my eyes and filled both of our glasses with milk and sat crossed legged on the floor.
I found Jeff on the floor, swallowing each cupcake with only two bites. “Do you even chew on your food?” I asked him. “Whaaaaat?” he asked, his words desperately making its way through the saliva covered fragments of cake in his mouth. I rolled my eyes at his love for food but still smiled, because I love him. I picked a cupcake and carefully peeled the wrapper, careful not to make a mess and took a bite. Oh God, these taste like God carved them.
“Your mom is a great baker” he says, picking another cupcake off the tray.
“Yeah she is. Im going to learn it from her after I’m done with school,” I stated
“That means I’ll be getting more food for free,” he said, beaming.
“Yeah you will,” I said as I popped the last fragment of cupcake into my mouth and wiping my hands on my shirt.
“When you said you wanted to take Miley to the Dance, did you mean it?” I asked Jeff after a long enough silence.
“What? No! I was teasing you!” he said and scooted closer to the tray and grabbed his glass and taking a large sip.
I nodded and smiled. After downing another cupcake and half a glass of milk, I grabbed the bag of art supplies and started on my first banner.
