Ring...Ring...Ring
Amanda startled awake from the vibration on her chest. When she saw that her phone was ringing, she instantly calmed down.
'That must be mom asking if I'm okay,' Amanda groggily thought.
When she turned her phone over, she saw Red's name appear on the screen.
Amanda prepared herself for another hour-long conversation and answered the phone.
"Hey, Amy!" Red cheerfully said.
Amanda looked outside, and then at Ebony's digital clock. "Red, it's two in the morning."
Amanda could hear him shrug, "I can't sleep."
Amanda had a sense why he couldn't sleep. He's presumably worried about Irvin and the letter he sent to Cupid. Amanda couldn't say that over the phone though, otherwise, Red might get suspicious.
She decided to change the subject, "So, why are you calling?"
"I just wanted to know...are you going to the Valentine's Day dance?"
'Crud,' Amanda thought. She didn't want to lie, but she had to.
"No."
Amanda could hear the sadness in his voice, "Aww, why?"
"Because I'm not one for social events. Besides, it would be a good idea to get a head start on the Chemistry chapters."
"That makes sense, I guess. But why would you need to get a head start? You're the smartest one in Mrs.Hawthorne's class," Red asked.
Amanda didn't know how to answer the question, so she paid more attention to Red's statement. "How do you know if I'm the smartest or not?"
Red performed a mocking voice of Mrs.Hawthorne, "'I am very disappointed in all of your test scores. If only you could be like my top student.' Then I said your name, and she screamed 'YES.'"
"Did she really say that?" Amanda snickered.
"Ye," Red chuckled.
After her fit of giggles, Amanda let out a quiet yawn, which Red took as a sign to hang up.
"It is still early; you should get some more sleep. I heard that the lack of sleep could cause skin damage and lead to skin aging."
Amanda smiled a bit at Red's health care knowledge.
"Wouldn't want to mess up your pretty face," Red continued.
It took a bit for Amanda to realize what Red was suggesting; when she did, a blush formed on her face.
'Is he...flir...ting?'
The thought stained Amanda's face to a bright red. She could practically feel the heat coming out of her features.
Amanda struggled to speak, "U-uh, ye-yeah. You too.."
Amanda realized what she said and mentally slapped herself while Red silently laughed.
"I'll leave you alone. Talk to you later," Red said.
Amanda heard a blowing noise over the phone and red threatened to coat her face again.
'God, I'm so WEAK! He's not about blowing a kiss, Amanda. It's just a tease, ' Amanda tried to convince herself.
"Goodbye then."
The two hung up, leaving Amanda alone. She laid her back against the bed and inaudibly groaned.
Amanda stared at the ceiling and turned her head to the left. She made eye contact with Ebony, who was staring at Amanda with an evocative look.
