I shot up from my bed in tears, I looked out my window to see that it was pitch black outside. Taking note that it was late and Kayla was asleep, I slowly crept out of bed, flinching when my bare feet touched the cold hardwood floor. I opened my bedroom door to see nothing but more darkness. I crept down the stairs and to the fridge, I wasn't going to turn down a midnight snack after a nightmare. I couldn't quite remember what the dream was about, but as long as it was over now. Whatever it was must have been terrifying. I opened the fridge door and scanned through everything on the shelves. Nothing. It was odd to be unable to find a sweet snack. But I shrugged and told myself I was just going to have to go to the store tomorrow.
~ time skip ~
The next morning I put on a cute summer dress with a flower pattern on it. I grabbed my handbag and keys. "Need anything from the store?" Kayla looked my way, thinking of something that was obviously food. "Popsicles". "Well, Popsicles it is then, I'll see you later." She nodded as I closed the door and made my way down the stairs and down the street. I got a few friendly smiles from some people I sometimes see walking around. As I entered the store I noticed there were more people than usual. It was challenging to get to the frozen foods aisle. I saw kids running around and was eventually rammed into by one of them. I fell backwards and awkwardly sat there trying to gather my thoughts.
"Hello again doll" Jackson walked up to me and reached his hand out to me. I took it and was pulled roughly towards him. I ended almost losing my balance from the sudden force. I bumped into his chest, yet it didn't seem to phase him. He just chuckled and set his hand on my shoulder, I could feel my cheeks heating up from the embarrassment. "Hi.." Was all I could get out of my mouth. His eyes pierced into mine as I look up at them. A smirk was shown on his face as he picked up the basket full of groceries that I dropped and handed it to me. "S-Small world, huh?" I tired to make somewhat of a small talk without embarrassing myself any further. "Sure is" He glanced down at the items in my basket and pointed to a rotisserie chicken I had in it. "Where'd you find that?" He asked "Looks like a delicious dinner." "Oh, right over here." I gestured him to follow me as I started walking.
He wore a warm smile as he followed closely behind me. I showed him and he got one of his own. We started talking about what foods taste good with what along with different recipes. He even gave me a few tips on how to cook different meats. After we got in line to pay I realized Kayla was probably starving and that I should hurry. I paid and got out with a few bags, walking quickly. I was so focused that I almost didn't here Jax call for me. I stopped and turned around to see him trying to catch up to me"Kristine? Something wrong?" I could just barley hear worry in his voice, maybe he thought he did something wrong. I quickly look up to meet his eyes. They were no longer a deep sea color, they were now an icy blue, they seemed to almost glow. I shook my head and smiled warmly. "No, I'm sorry my roommate was just expecting me to come home a while ago. So I should get walking" he seemed annoyed when I mentioned the fact that I walked to the places I needed to get to.
"Let me drive you, my way of thanks for the chicken" he said letting out a laugh towards the end of his sentence. "You don't have to do that..I'm fine walking" he stepped closer to me and gently took one of my bags from my hands. He did so while keeping our eyes locked onto each other. A smirk crept onto his face as I sighed in defeat and followed him to his car. He put our bags in the back seat and opened the door for me. "Thank you" I said, stepping into his silver jeep. He nodded and we drove away. We were getting pretty close to my apartment building when he got a call and his facial expression was now very serious. He hung up and looked my way as our eyes met. "You mind if we take a tiny detour?" I could see that he wanted me to say yes but Kayla probably didn't want to wait any longer. "How about we drop off the food for Kayla and then you go to whatever detour you want. He nodded and we continued driving.
As we pulled up we grabbed the bags and hurried up to my apartment. After I let him in and told Kayla to put away the food I led him out into the hall. "Why don't you come with me? Its gonna be quick I promise." "Fine, where are we going?" His eyes lit up as he smiled warmly. "Its a surprise " he smirked and I felt a tingle in my cheeks. I nodded and let Kayla know I would be back later. She rose an eyebrow as I shut the door, following Jax down the stairs. Where was he taking me? I knew this was naive and ignorant. But for some reason, I trusted him.
