Maryam and Rumaisa were seated side by side, Rumaisa idly playing with Kamal.
"You have to end it now," Maryam warned her.
"What do you mean, end it?" Rumaisa asked, glancing at her.
"You said it yourself—everyone is telling you that you'd be the one suffering most if you don't fix your relationship. This revenge thing will ruin you."
"Look, now, it's not all about revenge. It's about hitting two birds with one stone," Rumaisa replied with a smirk.
"And by that you mean?"
"I can have my revenge and, at the same time, ruin any atom of pride he has in him."
"I never knew you were daft," Maryam muttered.
Rumaisa turned and glared at her.
"Maryam, don't turn this conversation into a fight," she warned.
"How many guys would want a divorced, spoiled, rude girl whose nudes were leaked as a wife? I'm not insulting you—I'm just telling you the truth. No one would want that. I know I wouldn't want that for any of my brothers, not even my stepbrothers."
"How is that not an insult? Look, if you don't want to back me up, then you can shut your mouth, pick up your son, and leave."
"I started helping you with this whole revenge plan when you told me what happened. Even then, I told you that when things get rough, I'm not going to be a part of it. Imagine if he finds out—it's either he divorces you, or he marries again. And we both know he's going to marry Hadiza. I'm married and I have a child, and I'm proud to say it out loud. Of all the things you've done in your life, what can you proudly show? Nothing."
Maryam got up, grabbed her bag and Kamal.
"When you are in need of a friend, you can call me," she said.
"Who says I'll need you?" Rumaisa shot back.
"Only time can tell," Maryam replied, walking out.
Rumaisa sat there, replaying their conversation in her mind. Maybe Maryam was right. Maybe this whole revenge plan was a suicide mission.
Just then, Sarah came in and sat beside her.
"What are you thinking about so deeply?" she asked.
"Well... Maryam and I just had a huge argument. I think we might have ended our friendship," Rumaisa admitted.
"What did you argue about?"
"She wants me to stop my revenge plans immediately."
"Oh wow! She has guts."
"But she has nothing to lose if I do. Maybe, in the end, I'll be the one who regrets the whole vengeance plan and losing my best friend."
"Look, just do it. If you give up now, you're giving him what he wants."
"I don't even know what to do," Rumaisa confessed.
"What do you want to start with first?" Sarah asked.
"I'm not sure..."
"Easy. First, push him—do things he dislikes or hates until you cross the line and he lets you go. Then, show him what he missed out on by letting someone like you slip away."
"It doesn't make sense."
"You're getting married in two weeks. What other choice do you have?"
"None."
"Then think about it," Sarah said, standing and walking toward the door, a mischievous smile playing on her lips.
