"What was that for?" Carl asks finally walking into the living room. I fold my arms and look at him.

"You're so welcoming to them. So willing to make friends." I say. Carl throws his arms up and let's them fall back to his sides.

"Hailey! Are you on your period or something!?" He shouts. "I'm trying to be nice here! They welcomed us into their home, the least I can do is be respectful!"

I flinch a bit from his shouting, I don't like it when he screams. I look away from him and down at the floor boards.

"I..." I trail off. Carl sighs and sits next to me on the couch. He grabs my hand gently.

"You're just taking precautions. I get that." He says nicely. "I'm sorry for yelling."

I look at him and crack a small smile.

I don't know what's going on with me. I just don't want this to be a trap. I'm tired of running for my life. I'm just feeling a lot. Hopefully, things will be alright but I'm not sure.

Rick walks by us towards the front door but stops before leaving. He glances at us and sighs.

"What do you two think about this place?" He asks.

"It's nice. We should stay." Carl says. Ricks eyes direct to me and I honestly don't know what to say yet. I look away from Ricks powerful gaze and stand up. I look at Carl then at Rick.

"I don't know yet." I say. "And I know that you don't know yet."

Rick clenches his jaw and nods as he turns his heels and heads for the door. I look at Carl and he smiles.

"At least it wasn't a no."

I smirk and roll my eyes, walking away into the kitchen.

At least it wasn't a no.

I walk out to the porch, leaving Hailey on her own. Everybody is out on the porch, looking like they don't know what to do. I can't blame us, this is all new.

"Want to go check the other house?" Carol asks me. I look at dad for permission, even though I didn't really need to, and he nods his head. Carol and I head the house right next to the one we're staying at. Inside looks the same as the other, big.

"These are like mansions." I say. Definitely an upgrade from my house before this.

"And they're just giving them away." Carol says. I glance at her and she's just staring out the window. I draw my attention to other things in the house, curiosity at it's max. I hear Carol shuffle around and grab something.

"You coming?"

I guess we're heading out.

"Yeah, in a sec." I say not making eye contact. These houses amaze me. I hear the door shut, which tells me Carol is gone. I look around and can't help but smile, this is a house I would want one day. For Hailey, for our kids. My thoughts are broken as I hear creaking from upstairs. I didn't expect it so it scared me a little. Who would be in here? And why? I slowly walk up the huge stairs and slip out the knife I kept. I approach the only door that's shut in this whole house. I really don't know what's in there. I'm just hoping it's nothing bad, because we need this place. Hailey needs this place.

I swing the door open, ready for anything. But to my surprise no one was in there. Looking around there's a bunch of comic books and clutter. I grabbed one of the comics and made my way out. Whoever was in here, is not here anymore.
