I awoke to the sound of my phone ringing. I quickly grabbed it and answered the call.
"Hello."
"Josiah."
My breath caught in my throat. What do they want now?
"Sorry I didn't contact you sooner." I said.
There was silence on the other side then the person spoke.
"One of us will come and get you in a bit. We have one last task for you."
I sighed. One more task, finally it's almost over.
As I waited, I read over the pages I had gotten from Damian Barton. Each page was an update on how much information Mr. and Mrs. Aamot had found. They were reaserching about this because of me. They were still thinking of me, and maybe they were still looking for me. I felt at peace now but also very nervous and excited. I wanted to meet them eagerly but I had to escape these people first.
When the man finally arrived I got up and followed him out of the room. I noticed him look around to make sure no one had noticed me leaving and then we left the building. The drive back was quiet. No one spoke or even make the slightest movement.
I entered the building with a guard in front and a guard behind me. This wasn't the time to escape though so it didn't matter right now. At the moment I was going to speak to Renée. They had told me she was very disappointed in me. That didn't really bother me. When I entered the room she looked at me for a moment before speaking.
"Now that you have had a little time to rest, I would like to explain your next and final task."
"Time to rest?! You gave me a day and a half!"
"There is a man by the name of Jeston Mcgee. He has left the company and will likely spill valuable information to a journalist. I would like you get get rid of him, kill him."
"You, want me to, kill him?" I asked, clearly shocked.
"Yes."
I knew arguing wasn't going to help this situation, but Renée was taking this too far. Yes I would steal for her if it was to protect my sister, but I would not kill.
Later that day I was in my room sitting on my bed. I was trying to think of a plan. How could I escape? I knew it would not be easy without my powers. I heard a knock on the door and expecting it was my diner I tried opening the door, it was unlocked. When I opened the door there was a guard handing me a plate of food.
"Thanks." I said.
Then there was a loud crash from down the hall. The guard looked at me briefly before saying.
"Go protect Renée, I'll go see what it is."
This was my chance to escape and I knew it but, if I didn't go to Renée, with the noise that was made the halls would be filled with guards, so I hurried towards her office. When I entered she turned to me with a gun pointed at my chest, then she realized it was me and put her gun away. I was wearing a outfit like the guards, a loose black long sleeve shirt, a white baseball cap, black pants and a belt with a gun. The gun wouldn't help me try to escape here though because almost everyone had a gun with them. I saw Renée quickly glance at her computer screen, she probably has the security cameras shown there. She looked really nervous, I had never seen her like this.
"What is going on?" I asked.
"People have broken in. I don't know how many there are, maybe 5 or 6." She replies.
"Do you know what they want?"
"I have an idea."
"Why don't you just call the police then?"
"Because then the police would ask questions."
Makes sense. I wondered what was so important that these people would break in and try to steal it. Just then there was the sound of a gun being fired outside the room and a loud shout. I took out my gun and aimed it at the door then, slowly I took a step. Everything was silent. I took a deep breath and then opened the door. I wasn't going to wait for them to come to me.
The first thing I saw was one of the guards knocked out on the ground. Then I noticed someone who definitely didn't work here, leaning against the wall holding their leg. There was blood on their hands as they tried to stop the bleeding. Then man looked to be in his fifties but it was hard to tell because he had a mask covering his face. I pointed my gun at them.
"Why are you here? Who are you?" I asked.
"I'm here to help someone and it doesn't matter who I am." They replied.
Then they looked up and looked me in the eyes.
"Josiah."
I was about to ask him how he know my name when there were the sounds of many footsteps and a group of people came down the hall. They were on the same side as the man who spoke my name because as soon as they saw me they surrounded me and pointed their guns at me.
"Drop your gun or we will shoot, normally we would just knock you out but you already hurt someone."
"I didn't—" I tried to say before I was cut off.
"Drop the gun, I won't say it again!"
Please Renée, don't hurt my sister because of this, I thought as I dropped my gun and it fell to the floor.
"Good, now put your hands above your head." They said.
"Wait, his eyes!" Someone said.
I looked down nervously.
"Josiah?" A woman's voice asked.
So I finally posted another chapter! Exams are starting but I had a snow day today so that made time. Good luck everyone who is doing exams this week and I hope you all have a great day!
