— 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐓 𝐂𝐎𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐎 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃. ▷"Okay so, I know you and I haven't always gotten along, and this is kinda awkward..." My fingers rub back of my neck agitatedly. "But we leave in a few minutes so um... Yeah. Later."
The atmosphere smells like wet grass, and air feels intoxicatingly humid what with the steamy morning fog. Distant raindrops patter from the rain that took place last night while a fresh pipe of bamboo streams water at my side, slipping from leaf to leaf until it meets the ground. Other than that, it's just silence.
I purse my lips impatiently as those natured sounds replace the response I anticipated.
"Leaving me hanging. Well screw you then."
But my scowl is replaced with intrigue when the fine legged creature dances on dew clenched feet, and wears a shell shinier than a button.
I sit with focus as I watch the cobweb glisten cyan and pink from the manipulation of flowers behind it. It's not your standard milky web, but more crisp. The droplets of water sliding and meeting in the center look like pearls on silk thread.
Gross... How can such an ugly creature lure so many flies?
Is it that lonely? Or are flies just gullible?
Whatever, it's fascinating in a way. The silk is so delicate they don't even know it'll be their death bed.
I have the urge to smash the whole thing with my bare hand... But my tightened fist is released and I rest my arm on my right knee with another exhale, shutting my eyes softly and letting my mind flash.
Thundery skies. Rain so violent it could stab, and a manhole that was causing the street to smoke. Blue and red lights wash over graffiti-stained bricks while sirens fade in and out.
"Oh shoot, let's bounce!"
The flickering street lights get caught in the reflection of a dirty puddle as well as our shoe bottoms that peddle away.
But then I see her hand grasps mine as we sprint out laughing. "C'mon Tae, before we get caught!"
Those flashbacks mould back into the spider before me. I open my eyes and show the insect a faint head tilt before finally standing up.
"Maybe... It's a bit of both."
Suddenly the web bounces, making its little marbles strum off like strings.
"Dude! There you are!" I look up at the familiar voice. The boy running towards me smiles with accidental rosy cheeks and metallic silver hair.
"The coach is leaving soon, driver says we gotta' put our bags down now if we want to make it to San... What are you even doing?"
He doesn't even give me time to respond before crouching down with his nose inches from the cobweb. His eyes cross, brows furrow and lips pout.
"You're watching this bug? Gross. I thought you had a phobia of these things anyway?"
"I do."
He stares at me with a momentary poker face of confusion, but then then shakes his head and pats me on the back. "Whatever freak. Let's go before everyone cusses us out."
With a scoff, I raise my chin and squint at the sun that forms rainbow-ringlets in my vision, the shadowy cage of my eyelashes protecting it before I spare one last distancing glance at the milky web.
Once we reach the coach and put our backpacks with the others, our journey begins.
I tune out background chatter with my earphones and rest my temple against the window as we pull onto the main road. The scenery is mostly just concrete and cars that blend together until a colorful billboard catches my eye.
It's blood red with two male silhouettes fighting, a dragon and tiger roaring at each other above with bold yellow text.
"Hey, J..." I tap him on the arm. He unhooks his earphone, "Hm?"
A frown lingers on my lips, "Do you think anything's changed? Is that place still, how do I put it... Hell?"
He sighs and continues tearing open his box of mochi bites. "I don't know, but I guess we couldn't stay in paradise forever. We have to go home at some point."
"Hmph. Home." I scoff under my breath, finding my gaze getting lost in my lap. Suddenly I feel a finger in my mouth.
My head jolts back and eyes bulge when he stuffs the snack deeper between my lips. "Cheer up loser. I'm sure things are better since two years ago. Remember, we're here to train. That's it. Now eat." He squishes my cheeks to force the motion.
I force a wide fake smile with squinted eyes and a stuffed cheek. He swats my shoulder and turns back around at my sarcasm. With my nose squished against the glass, I gaze back out the window once more.
The billboard in the distance becomes a blur when my focus narrows solely on the tiny spider crawling up the other side.
My shoulders stiffen with shock... But I find myself staring curiously.
I still wonder if a spider could conquer a tiger... I still wonder if a spider is less lonely with a fly in its web.
