After an eventful day of wax strips and tub water, I enter my home slightly bowlegged from the lingering soreness to find Gramma and Pa in the kitchen.

"Mei! There you are!"

"Hi Gramma."

Unexpectedly, she begins pinching and tugging at my cheeks, examining my face from all angles whilst squinting and humming. My eyes shift around in confusion.

"Uh... Watchya' doing?"

"Inspecting your face, dear! You have good skin... Ooo, except for that little blemish on your chin."

I instinctively gasp and shield the area. "W-why are you inspecting my face?"

"Because tomorrow is September 29th, and you know what that means!" She shimmies with an excited grin.

"...Family dinner."

"Correct! It's the only time you get to share a meal with your dear aunts. I'm going to need you to put on some makeup and wear that Hanfu of yours."

"Gramma, you know I hate makeup..."

Usually I'm not one to whine or question my Gramma's wishes, and I respect that her generation's very traditional, but the whole aesthetic of pasty white skin, tiny red lips, and thickly painted eyeshadow has never looked appealing to me. It looks a bit ridiculous.

"But Mei, you're aunts have been so excited to see you. They've been writing to me non stop! Besides, Jingfei will be bringing along her God-son who happens to be your age. The two of you could get on well, eh? Eh?" She nudges me with bouncing eyebrows.

I close my eyes and sigh.

My "aunts" are Gramma's old friends from across the farm. Every time they visit for a meal, they always try to set me up with some kind of suitor. Why can't family just appreciate me being single?

"The dinner is tomorrow night so I want my little plum looking her best. And since you don't know how to do makeup, I'm going to do it for you! What do you say??"

I return Gramma a half-smile and blink as I think to myself.

I really can't stand old fashioned Chinese makeup. But at the same time... I don't wanna disappoint her.

So I hold her hands that clutch mine and smile.

"Of course. Whatever makes you happy."
