CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
MELONIE'S POV

You never really know what it means for your life to flash before your eyes before it actually happens. And when it does, you feel all of your emotions from all of the years that you've been alive. You feel all of the guilt, jealousy, happiness, sadness, loneliness, pain, fear, anxiety... everything. And when your life flashes before your eyes, you wish you could go back to fix all of your mistakes, but it might be too late.

I didn't know what that felt like until today. Today will forever be imprinted in my mind.

"Mel, you have to eat something," Jackson tried, pushing a piece of toast toward me.

"Stop worrying about me so much," I smirked. "I'm fine. I never eat breakfast."

"But you should," he sighed, giving me puppy dog eyes. "Haven't you heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day?"

"Aw, you're so cute when you're worried." My thumb caressed his cheek and I pecked him on the lips. "But I assure you, I'm fine. If I get hungry, I'll eat something."

"Okay," he sighed, grabbing his car keys. "We should get to work, though." He extended his arm for me and I gladly intertwined my fingers with his.

I grabbed my bag from the couch and followed him outside, into the car as he started it. I was putting my hair up as we backed out of the driveway and I slipped my shoes on.

"Have you spoken to Alex since yesterday?" Jackson asked me, his hands firmly gripping the wheel, referring to yesterday when I walked in on them making out.

"Nope," I said plainly. "I haven't spoken to Jo either."

"Why are you so worked up about this? Do you still have feelings for him?" Jackson worried, looking at me.

"No, of course not." I looked at him. "I haven't talked to Jo because I know Alex is going to hurt her and I don't wanna be there to witness it."

"But when he hurts her, she's gonna need a friend to turn to," Jackson responded. "And if you're not there, she'll have to go to her other intern friends, who have no idea how to handle a heartbreak caused by Alex Karev."

I looked down at my feet, sighing and looking at him. "I hate when you're right."

"Sweetie, I'm always right," he laughed.

We began to move again as our light turned green and the other intersection part was red. I looked to my right and saw a huge semi truck coming right for us.

"Oh my God!" I screamed. "Jackson!"

All I heard was a loud crash and a tremendous amount of pressure hit my side before everything went black.

MEREDITH'S POV

"Cristina, you're gonna have to talk to Owen sooner or later," I told her as we walked through the halls.

   "No, I don't," she muttered.

"You work together! You can't avoid him forever." I stopped walking and forced her to face me. "At some time, you two are going to be put into the same surgery, or assigned to the same case. Trust me, you're gonna have to talk to him."

"You know me. I'm really good at avoiding people." A cheesy smile was plastered on her face.

Suddenly, the doors from the loading area burst open and Owen came running in with a gurney. He seemed very frantic.

"Get out of the way!" he screamed with worry in his voice. I had never seen any of our doctors this worked up about a patient.

I ran over to see that it was one of our very own surgeons. Dr. Jackson Avery. My eyes grew wide and my jaw dropped, looking at the vulnerable Jackson on the gurney, and I ran alongside it. His face was all scratched up, his legs were both covered in blood, and he had a tube running down his throat.

"What happened to him?!" I screamed.

"A semi hit his car," Owen said, obviously leaving something out. Then it hit me.

"Where's Melonie?!" I looked at him, and he just stared at me. "Where the hell is my sister?!"

   "I don't know," he sighed.

"You don't know?!" I shouted, running toward the loading area.

Before I could get outside, another gurney was rushed in, pushed by Callie. I ran as fast as I could toward the gurney that my little sister was lying on. She was in the same condition as Jackson, but her injuries were worse. The semi must have hit the side she was sitting on...

"Oh my God!" I yelled, running alongside the gurney, looking down at her. "Melonie, wake up! Wake up right now!"

"Meredith." Callie pushed my shoulders back, stopping me from following them into the room. "You cannot be in this room."

   "She's my sister!"

"And we're going to do everything we can to help her, but you're too emotional. You can't be in there," Callie sighed, and I just stared at her as a tear escaped my eye. "Mer, I know this is scary, but you have to trust us."

I nodded, wiping my eyes. "Okay. I trust you. But if my sister dies on that operating table, I will never forgive you."

"Wow. Okay. No pressure," Callie scoffed, rushing into the room.

I slid down against the wall, covering my face with my hands. I ran my fingers through my hair as I heard the rapid beeping of the machines and everyone's chatting about what they were doing to Melonie.

"Meredith?" Derek approached me, sitting beside me. "What's wrong?"

   "M-Melonie..." I sobbed. "I don't know if s-she's gonna m-make it."

   "What do you mean?"

"H-Her and Jackson w-were hit by a s-semi," I stuttered, choking on my sobs. "Melonie's in really bad shape."

Derek looked at me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. I laid my head on his shoulder as he kissed the top of my head, then resting his head on top of mine.

"She's gonna be okay," he reassured me. "You know how good Callie is at what she does. She's in good hands."

"I want to think so, but you didn't see how banged up she was." I wiped my tears. "She lost a lot of blood."

"You need to think better than that," he told me. "If you keep thinking like that, she won't get better."

"And if I keep thinking that she's going to be fine and then she dies, I'll be even more devastated than I already am," I responded. "Trust me, I'm just trying to prepare myself for the worst."

"I mean, you should be prepared, but there's still hope." He pulled me closer to him. "She's gonna be okay."

For the next few hours, he sat there with me, whispering good thoughts into my ear to keep me from going insane, but it wasn't exactly working.
