Marinette's POV

The evening I nearly died started with a normal patrol. I was leaping along the roofs of my city that I'd memorized by now with ease, my Kitten in black shadowing my every movement. My laugh rang out as I flipped over another white chimney.

Suddenly, I caught sight of a man cowering in an alley below, backed up against a wall by his attackers. I glanced at Chat, and we descended. I had hooked my yo-yo onto an above lamppost, and now I lowered myself slowly. I finally perched above it, red latex-clad feet on tiptoe. The four men turned to me, distracted from Chat's silent jump into the dark shadows that matched his own supersuit.

"Ladybug!" The man backed up against the wall cried, his posture softening.

One of the attackers' faces turned up to me, his dark brown eyes glinting in the soft light of the night. "Little Ladybug all alone decided to face the three big bad wolves?" He taunted. His comrades both laid a hand on his arm and attempted to pull him back, but he shook them off.

Chat stepped out of the shadows and snarled, "My Lady is neither little nor is she alone. You'd better watch out when robbing someone in the city of Ladybug and Chat Noir." He curled in a feral position on all-fours, ready to pounce.

Another visibly gulped, then stepped next to the first attacker. "You only handle supervillains, not civilians." His voice shook.

"No. We stand against evil, magic-related or not."

"And civilians who threaten to rob innocent men fall under meow-r definition of 'evil'." Chat grabbed the first man and spirited him away. As the largest of the attackers reached up to pull him back down, I caught their hands in my yo-yo. A single tug had them all on their knees before me.

"Whatever you do, you won't escape justice." I heard a soft thump behind me. "Chat Noir is going to call the police. But don't worry - I'll summon a little Lucky Charm just for you. Lucky Charm!" Receiving a rope, I cooed, "How wonderful! I know how the safety of Paris is your priority, so my Lucky Charm gave me a way to keep you here and patrol!" In a flash, I'd tied them all up, putting trackers on them just in case.

I swung away. Despite my hurried pace, I detransformed over the deepest waters of the Seine. My yo-yo dissipated alongside my transformation. I immediately began falling. "Tikki, get help!" is all I managed to get out before meeting the murky river waters. With all my clothes on, I quickly sank. I tried to swim upwards, but my clothes dragged against me. I swam harder, managing to get some water between me and the deepest waters in Paris.

My chest started feeling tight. Panicking, I swung upwards desperately trying to break the surface. I tried flipping to my back, and my clothes only dragged me down farther. Turning back onto my belly, I tried desperately to swim upwards.

For some odd reason though, my muscles were weak. I began to stop struggling, instead watching the green-blue waters swirl as the current pushed them along. Why did I need to swim up again? I only needed to take a breath and everything would be fine. I finally opened my mouth, and sucked in some much needed -

Water. Water. Too much water. My eyes began to fuzz as I quickly exhaled the water and held my breath. The world was fuzzy now. I barely made out a pink cat-mouse thing before falling unconscious.

I woke up. Spluttering at the slippery feeling of someone's lips, I looked up into Chat Noir's jade eyes. His mask went slack along with his wrinkled skin. "Princess! You're alive!" I blinked, blearly noting the black-spotted red kwami that bobbed in the air beside my partner. "I'm glad I am." I croaked out.

He buried me in a hug, and whispered into my shoulder, "I can't lose you, milady."
