The many (loveable) quirks of Phil Lester (1)

By now the whole internet knows of the infamous "Can Phil express an opinion?" thing that melted so many hearts. But what they don't know was that this didn't just happen in front of people. No, it was an almost daily thing. Another such example of this is during one of Dan and Phil's live-shows.

"What did you think of YouTube rewind?" Dan asks Phil, reading from the chat.

"What did I think of it?" Phil asks, stalling and leaning back on his hands. He can already feel his heart beat picking up slightly.

"Yeah," Dan responds, smiling fondly at the camera. He knew Phil was hesitant about answering, but he had to learn to express himself and not just let everyone else do the talking.

"Uhhh.." Phil says, laughing nervously. "It was an interesting one.." He adjusts his position, a scared glint in his eyes.

"Do you want me to take this?" Dan asks, recognizing his body language and thinking he wasn't actually going to give an outright answer. "Look, I have an opinion on YouTube rewind."

"It was a bit- I- I liked some of the people in it," Phil says, not looking at the camera, "so when I saw Sophia Nygaard stirring the pot I was like 'Yes! More of this!'"

"Yes, that was my favorite moment," Dan says, encouraging Phil to keep going, hoping he would actually say his negative feelings on it and not just talk about the parts he liked.

"I loved that bit. And I did like some of it, but overall I thought it was a bit incoherent." Phil says that then quickly dives out of the camera shot. "There, I've said my piece."

Dan gives him an exaggerated impressed look, but he was genuinely feeling proud of Phil. He actually said some of this feelings, and not just the positive, good ones either. Sure, incoherent was a bit broad, but it was better than nothing. At least Phil was trying to open up more.

After that Dan continues to talk about his opinion on YouTube rewind, Phil popping in and out of the camera. He was scared if he stayed in and looked at the chat it would be just nasty hate comments. He sneaks a glance, and is relieved to see its mostly people saying "Keep going Phil!" or "Aw Phil it's okay!" and even "CaN pHiL eXpReSS aN oPiNioN?" He's heartened by that and Dan's openness, enough to stay in the camera shot.

Phil may always be hesitant to express his true opinion, but he was better than he used to be, thanks to a certain Daniel Howell. He was always there, pushing Phil slightly and sticking up for him. Dan had seen Phil grow over the years to the more confident person he is today, and that's one of the few things that make him truly happy.
