Warnings: Violence, slight homophobia
————————————————————————Dan's POV
"Phil! I'm going out for a bit!" I call to Phil from across the flat. I hear a "okay!" in response. I check myself in the microwave reflection to make sure my flower crown is on right before leaving our apartment. I step outside and breath in the fresh air. I had been wanting this. Wanting to feel the breeze, the sun, after being cooped up for so long. I walked around town, taking in the city sounds. The beeping cars and talking people were normal nosies to me. I smile and wave at little children who giggle with glee at my bright colors. It wasn't too bad here. Just the occasional jerks made it seem bad sometimes.
I walk to the park and look across the lake that's there. There are families of ducks and people alike, mingling in and around the lake. Several children are tossing bread crusts to some ducks. After awhile of staring I go find something to eat, as it's almost dinner. I hoped Phil would find something to eat. I laugh to myself. Or get up to eat at all. He was as helpless as a kitten sometimes.
After grabbing a quick dinner at a pizza place I walk around town one last time. The occasional car headlights illuminate my path for a few moments before leaving me alone with the lamp lights above. I look up above me, admiring the stars. What a beautiful night, I think to myself. All of a sudden, like a loud noise in a library, there's a sudden loud crash! from one of the alleys. I jump and whirl around. I let out my breath when no one was there except a little black cat.
"Hello there, little one," I say softly, bending over slightly and extending a hand of friendship. "Are you a stray?" The cat sniffs my hands and perks up at the pepperoni smell on my fingers. It gives a couple licks to my fingers. Accepting that I wasn't going to hurt it, it rubbed up against my leg. "You seem to nice to be a stray," I say to the cat, even though it can't understand me. I pet it's back, and it rubs up into the touch. I smile and check for a collar. The name tag reads Callie.
"So you have a home," I wonder aloud. I look around, seeing if there was anyone running and saying their cat had escaped. No such person was there. I gently pick up the cat. She rubs her face eagerly against mine. I giggle at the feeling. "Well I suppose I can take you home until we find your owner," I say, rubbing the cats head. I begin walking to my home.
I was almost to the apartment building when someone suddenly shouts, "Hey!" I flinched and turned around. A large man was walking towards me, very quickly. I try not to sound scared as I reply pleasantly, "Yes?"
The man comes close enough that I can make out his features. He has patches of stubble on his face, and many scars. His greasy hair is tied back in a pony tail. "That cat is mine," he grunts, pointing at Callie. I look at her resting on my shoulder. Her claws are digging in my shoulder, as if scared I'm going to give her to this man.
"She-shes your cat?" I stutter, knowing that I was going to regret what I was about to do.
"Yeah now give her over," he says, reaching for her. Callie digs her claws in more. I painfully pull her paws out of my arm while avoiding the mans grab.
"Now w-wait a minute," I say, trying to appear as threatening as possible, "Do you have forms to prove she's yours?"
"You don't need no forms to know she's my cat," the man growls, fists clenching.
"I think I do," I say, inclining my head slightly.
"Hand her to me," He spits in my face, "or I'll take her myself."
"I'd like to see you try," I sass back before breaking into a run, heading for my apartment. The man gives a yell before giving chase. I run as quickly as I can while clutching Callie closely to me. When I get there I run to the back, not wanting anyone possibly coming out to see me stealing presumably this mans cat. I wasn't sure I believed him. And even if I did, Callie obviously doesn't like him. I slam into the door as I turn the nob. I drop Callie on the floor and she runs into a corner under the stairs. I swing the door shut as I pant desperately for breath. That was cl- the door doesn't shut. Looking down, I see a huge foot in the door stopping it from closing.
