CHAPTER ONE
God knows how slow the time felt while I was waiting for my papers in order to finally run away from this hospital. The turmoil inside my little heart was building up every second that went by.
I knew I had to see Colt; I could never leave without saying bye to him, or see how he was doing. For once more, and who knows how many more times in the past, he saved the father of my child.
I was fixing the monitor screen for so long, staring at the image of my little bean baby, without even blinking that my eyes turned into dust. The doctor said that I was only two to three weeks pregnant.
That's why I had barely missed my period... Suddenly, my little bubble of thought got interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Hello?" I replied anxiously.
"Valeria?"
Colt slipped inside my room while holding his arm against his abdominal, with his fingers pressing gently on his ribcage. He looked tired, beaten up. My heart tightened when I saw his lips stretching into a luminous smile as he walked towards me.
As if suddenly everything that had happened just hit me, tears started rolling down my face. Colt's shoulders dropped while he tried to pace up in order to come and sit on the edge of my bed.
His hand rested on my cheek, his thumb wiped the tear that was resting on my skin, slowly, softly. As if he was afraid that this simple gesture would break me like a doll made out of porcelain.
"What's wrong beautiful?" He whispered as his eyes started to search for mine.
"I'm leaving, Dante," I murmured, pursing my lips together while avoiding his gaze.
"What are you talking about, Val?"
"I'm going to accept the position, Dante. I need a way out... I'm sorry," my voice was so low that it was barely audible, as my eyes drifted once again towards the screen monitor.
Colt clenched his jaw, allowing his hand to slowly fall from my cheek to my shoulder, slightly squeezing it.
"I know that everything seems like a completely fucking mess right now, angel," he sighed, trying to collect his thoughts, "but I swear, I'll help you fix it."
"I don't know if I can Colt. I don't know if I have it in me anymore. I need some room to breathe, I'm suffocating."
"Is it me?" he muttered, afraid of the response.
"What? No! Never! I never even got the chance to thank you for saving us!"
I pulled him in for a hug, without really thinking that this simple gesture could cause him pain. Dante growled softly but he resumed with a giggle, gladly accepting my embrace.
"With pleasure," He chuckled, moving slightly away from me in order to face me. "What did the doctors-" his eyes widened when they caught a glimpse of the ultrasound. A deep cut formed between his eyebrows before he resumed, "say..."
"I'm healthy... alive. All because of you," I whispered, placing my hand on his cheek. Almost as a reaction to my touch, his eyes closed firmly while his lips pursed together.
"And pregnant," he muttered.
I bit the inner side of my cheek, trying to choke back a sob. This isn't how I wanted for it to happen. I never wanted for my baby to grow up without a dad. I loved every moment I had spend with mine... I wanted to built a home, a family for him... her.
