CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I moaned with pleasure as I sank in the leather seats of the Impala, stretching my legs in front of me. Nathan wouldn't stop throwing glances at me, making sure that I was completely fine... until my phone rang.

"Jakey!" I happily replied, hearing Jake chuckle at the other end. "How are you doing?"

"I'm fine, sweetie. How are you and our little chickpea?"

My smile faded as long as I got a glimpse of Nathan frowning, his hand squeezing harder the steering wheel to the sound of Jake's name and probably to Jake's reply.

"We both are doing excellent... I should have called you a long time ago, I'm inexcusable, Jake."

"I should have as well, sweetie. But I thought you needed some time alone since the last time. You have your doctor's appointment today. Can I pick you up?"

Nathan turned his head towards me, pursing his lips together as he waited for my reply. I pouted my lips and groaned, covering the microphone of my phone so I could address Nathan.

"Stop looking at me like that!"

"Like what?" He mumbled, returning his gaze on the road.

"You know very well! Jake is doing what he has been hired for! And that means taking care of me, Nathan!"

"Alright... sweetie."

"Jake?"

"Yeah?"

"Can we meet directly at the doctor's? I'm running some errands."

"Sure. The appointment is in two hours. I'll be waiting for you."

"Perfect! Bye, Jake."

"Bye."

I really hope that the exchange between Nathan and I wasn't too loud because I felt that Jake was hesitating as he answered after my little pause. As I opened my mouth to tell Nathan off, my phone rang once again.

"Hello?" I replied without looking at the caller's ID.

"What's up princess? Do you have a moment to spare?"

As if the time couldn't be any worse, Dante had decided to catch up with me a few seconds after the previous menacing call. Nathan arched his eyebrows and tilted towards his window.

He supported his head with his fingertips while he kept his lips tightly pursed together. The veins on his throat were protruding intensely, his shoulders were incredibly tense.

"Sure, Dante. What's up?" I replied casually, throwing some sideways glances to Nathan.

"How's my niece doing?"

To the sound of this, Nathan pushed the break so hard that the car came to stop instantly. I looked at him shocked, with my mouth almost touching the floor while I still kept the phone glued to my ear.

"S? Are you okay? What was that?"

"I'm fine, I'm going to call you back."

I didn't give the time to Colt to reply, I abruptly hang up on him before turning my whole attention to Nathan, almost as if I was ready to strike against him with all my force.

"NIECE?!" He howled, taking me aback. "You knew and you kept it from me?!"

"It's a matter of speech, Nathan! You heard that the appointment is TODAY! Why are you screaming into my face when I should be the one doing it! You could have harmed the baby, Nathan! What were you thinking?!"
