~Jennifer's POV
He and I went to prom together, Hand in hand. Me wearing the dress I bought at the mall, he wearing the tux that seemed to match every gown in the hall. I saw everyone else looking at us as we walked past them. They were looking like, "Are they actually back together?" or maybe "Aren't they dating someone else?" Well, guess what. Prom doesn't necessarily mean expressing your love, but it's meant to leave you the best memories before you graduate. And that's what Josh and I are doing at this moment. Making memories.
He took my hand as we approached the dance floor. We started moving with the slow music, and then we started talking.
"Why did you tell me that we're better off friends?" I told him.
"I just thought that if I would remember you as an ex-girlfriend, then that will be bitter, wouldn't it?"
"So you think that..."
"If we stay friends? Well, we could still forgive each other along the way. Plus, we're young. We make a lot of mistakes. We learn, and we live with it. And that's how I want our relationship to be. Perfect. And if not, I want it to be at least memorable."
"Don't you think it's perfect with you and I in it?"
"I do, but if you could observe, Jen, we fight over the littlest things."
"But we get away from them immediately, right?"
"Sometimes."
"So...your point?"
"I'm stupid when it comes to love."
We both laughed at each other. Oh come on, he's almost like a thousand-year-old trapped in this ridiculously hot 18-year-old body.
"You're not stupid, Josh. You're smart. You use you mistakes to learn. Don't you think that that is a good thing?"
"I do, if that's what you say."
I chuckled, and he stopped talking. I decided to thank him for his kindness tonight.
"Thanks for taking me to prom today."
"Thanks for accepting my invitation."
He chuckled softly and looked at me. Then he finally said the words that I wasn't expecting to hear -
"Thank you so much for being my girlfriend, Jennifer. I love you."
I was touched by what he said, and it caused me to have butterflies. Does he have any idea on how I want to kiss him right now?
"Thank you for being my first and best boyfriend, Josh. I love you more."
He pulled me closer to him and we slow-danced. A bit of a charmer, honestly.
I perfectly remember the song that was playing. I perfectly remembered the spot we were standing on. I perfectly remembered that day. It was stunning, perfect, and extraordinary. Everything was just so perfect, and I loved Josh with all my heart. But we're not in a relationship, no, we're best friends. The thing is, it's not necessary to be in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship to make you feel special. It had to be a sincere (in the heart, mind, and soul) compliment or maybe a touching line made by the person himself. In short, if you think you're special, you are. While I was lacking self-esteem, Josh made me feel special. Not just as a friend, but also a best friend.
He rode me home tonight. Before I went inside my house, here's what happened:
"Thanks for taking me home." I tell him as I removed my seatbelt.
"Thanks for allowing me." He tells me shyly.
"Why wouldn't I?" I told him, and he simply giggled.
