"He doesn't know!" Olive giggled after Jacob freaked out over the airplanes coming by. "He thinks we're going to die!"
"It's only the changeover," Millard said with a shrug. "No reason to get your knickers in a twist."
Miss Peregrine had to reassure the New Kid that everything would be fine, and this happened every night. A few kids asked if they could bring Jacob to go see the changeover, and Miss Peregrine allowed us to, with the exception of wearing our masks.
Yeah, I made the mistake of not doing so once, and it sucked. Miss Peregrine had to personally escort me back inside, while I kept asking to go back outside. Although, that was more embarrassing than anything else.
Everyone excitedly rushed to go grab their masks, and Olive kept asking for them to wait for her. I went over, and helped the poor thing unbuckle out of her dining seat, and slip her heavy shoes back on. We hurried to join the others, grabbed gas masks for the two of us, and made it outside.
I found Millard, and quickly made my way over to him. "I bet Jacob's gonna wet himself."
"Ten pounds says he doesn't," Millard replied.
"I get a kiss if he does," I said, and instantly regretted it. "You know, as blackmail for later."
Millard hesitated before he said, "Deal."
Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run, run, RUN!
The bombs went off like fireworks, and everyone sung to the light show. It was demented to do this, in a way, but it also was like taunting the bombers as well. You can't hit us!
We made our way to Fiona's greatest masterpiece to date: A hedge replica of Michelangelo's Adam. We all watched as the final bomb dropped down, and hit Adam's finger perfectly. Jacob was crouching on the ground, and seemed to almost miss the changeover. The whole world turned white, as if it was the flash of a camera, and then it was night once again.
To be honest, my first changeover wasn't as noble as I hoped it was. It was maybe a week after my arrival when I finally had the guts to watch it outside of the house.
"You can let go of my arm, you know," Emma had told me.
I shook my head furiously. "Tonight is the night I'm gonna die, and I'm taking you down with me."
Emma shook her head and laughed. When she dragged me over to Adam, I covered my face as the changeover happened. I completely missed the whole thing.
Miss Peregrine was crouching next to Jacob. "Please accept my apologies," she said. "I should have better prepared you."
I snuck over to Jacob as Miss Peregrine called for a volunteer to take him home.
"You didn't wet yourself, did you?" I quietly asked him. He shook his head. "Okay, cool."
I left, and watched as Emma's hand lifted, volunteering her to take Jacob back. This was, quite obviously, a horrible plan, but Miss Peregrine allowed the two to leave. Even Jacob seemed disgruntled by the whole idea, and asked if I could go with. I immediately pretended I didn't know who he was, and looked the other way. Don't get me wrong; he's a sweet kid, but that would involve me having to walk to and from the Cairn with awkward silence. No thanks!
I waved goodbye to Emma, and found Millard by my side.
"What were you asking Jacob?" Millard asked.
"Nothing," I lied to him.
I didn't want him to talk about the bet we made, so I immediately began walking back to the house. I took off my mask, and threw it back where it originally came from. But Millard followed, unfortunately.

FanfictionWhat did I think about my life? It's cool, it's great, and I loved living in a tiny house with no air conditioning in London with my very sweet, very sarcastic cousin. Why would you ask? I mean, sure everyone kept saying, "1972 is your year, (Y/N)!"...
