Let Me Explain

Heather's POV

Okay, let me start from the beginning.

My name is Heather Louise Brown, and I have what nerds call Thermal Manipulation. If I'm close enough to something, I can normally change the thermal heat of it to the point that I can technically kill someone by burning them to a crisp with just a touch. That, and I could make little ice cubes for your water in an instant, so really, I can use the power to my heart's desire.

I didn't want to be different, despite popular belief at school. It was kind of (Y/N)'s thing to love the weird and peculiar, and there are days that I really wish I could just leave the loop, and pretend that the last ten months of my life just never happened. Because maybe then I could be driving to school in my little yellow car, smiling at pretty girls, and teasing boys back into the friend zone, because for me, that was comforting. I love being around people who have the same vibe as me, and not surrounded by children much older than they let on.

If I had went to Cairnholm by myself, and found out that loops and magical birds existed, I would have just said "Nope!" and went straight back home. But instead, I decided to stay, because it's what (Y/N) would have wanted me to do. And if I was being honest, I probably wouldn't survive in the real world without her holding my hand through it all. She has always been there for me whenever I am going through a silly breakup, and clapping for me when I would finish a choir performance at school. So I felt the need to be there for her, now, despite her not really needing my help with anything.

The fact that I never wanted anything to do with Miss Peregrine or her peculiar children is probably why I felt a strong need to be rebellious. I loved them all personally, but as a group, I couldn't stand them. Which was why Victor and I were planning to run away. But not today.

Currently, I was in the Priest Hole, holding hands with Cordelia St. Ives. But now I need to back up to how and why it truly is not what it looks like. Because I wasn't there to see Cordelia, or just to be out of town with Victor. I'm afraid that someone else got me into this mess.

I woke up that day in my normal state of Almost Dead But Not Quite, with hair in my face and dried drool on my nightgown, while feeling absolutely miserable. I was planning on hitting the library with (Y/N), and didn't even bother to change out of my clothes when going to grab breakfast.

Oatmeal was being made, and I grabbed a bowl, and sat in my usual spot. I waited for (Y/N) to follow suit, but she didn't. In fact, she wasn't even in the room, which was very worrisome. She would rather die than miss eating food.

I watched a bowl come floating over to the opposite side of the table. Knowing it was Millard, I put my spoon down, and snapped for his attention.

"Hey, you're dating my cousin," I said. That definitely got his attention. "Do you know where (Y/N) is?"

"First of all, I'm not dating (Y/N)," Millard started. "Second of all, she has early lessons with Miss Peregrine today. Doesn't she tell you these things?"

I wouldn't be surprised if she did, and I just totally forgot. I was at that level of tired, nowadays. So instead of answering, I just focused on finishing my food, and washing my dish in the kitchen. When walking out of the dining area, I patted Millard on the shoulder.

"Well, if you see her, give her a kiss on the cheek for me," I told him, and smirked.

Was I an awful cousin? Probably. Did I care? I honestly believe that everyone I had ever met wished I did.

I went straight up into my room, and managed to change out of my gross sleepwear. I pulled on a mustard colored tank top, as well as a black denim skirt, and socks to match the color choices. If I was going to be trash, I was going to do it in style. I pinned some hair back from my face, and started to walk out of my room.
