Kennedy's POV

Opening my eyes, the memory of yesterday flooded my brain. The fight with Atom, the acid fog and Bellamy consoling Charlotte. Looking around, I saw Bellamy lay on my right, fast asleep with a palm resting on my mid thigh. To my left, Charlotte's head rested on my shoulder, who was also still sleeping. 'Like one little almost-killed-by-acid-fog family' I thought to myself. Hearing Bellamy stir, I turned to face him.

"Morning Kennedy," he smiled, removing his hand from my leg to rub his eyes. "Sleep well?"

"Considering we are in a cave, it wasn't the worst night's sleep I've ever had," I responded and he chuckled slightly.

"Come on Charlotte," he spoke softly, shaking her slightly. Lifting her head, I could see the eye bags under her eyes and it only made me feel sorry for her.

"We need to head back to camp," Bellamy instructed, gathering up the few things we had in the cave. I picked up my bag and helped Charlotte up.

"OK, Kennedy, you take Charlotte back to camp and then get Clarke to check your hand. I'm going to find Murphy and Atom," he spoke authoritatively.

"Are you sure?" I asked, wanting to go with him but I knew both Charlotte and I needed to be back at camp.

"I'm sure. They can't have gone far and I'll make sure I'm back at camp before dark," he reassured me and I nodded. Walking out the cave, I was about to say goodbye to Bellamy when a loud groaning filled the air. Looking at each other in panic, Bellamy and I began to run towards the noise, keeping Charlotte's hand in mine to avoid losing her.

Reaching a clearing, we found the source of the noise. Atom. He lay on his back, covered in blisters that bore a similar resemblance to my left hand. His chest was rising and falling shortly and quickly and he looked un-savable.

Getting closer, the smell of burnt flesh filled my nose and his skin looked weepy and infected. It sounded like he was saying something and I lent closer to hear, Bellamy copying my actions. It still all sounded like nonsense. Leaning even closer, I finally heard his message.

"Kill me."

His eyes were only on Bellamy and I could see the pain in his eyes. I noticed Charlotte's hand moving, putting something in Bellamy's hand. A knife.

"Don't be afraid," she spoke quietly, only just being able to hear it myself. Bellamy turned to look at me, as if he was almost asking for permission and I nodded. With looking after Jasper, Clarke didn't have time to look after Atom as well and it didn't look like it was possible to help him. Other than killing him anyway.

"Charlotte, go and wait back in the cave in case there is any more fog," I told her, my eyes not leaving Bellamy's. I could see in the corner of my eye she nodded and walked away until she was out of sight. I didn't want her to see this and risk giving her more nightmares. Getting on my knees, I knelt next to Atom, Bellamy doing the same on the other side of Atom. I watched him twiddle the knife between his fingers and he looked scared.

"Kill me," Atom pleaded again and Bellamy looked at me helplessly.

"I can-I can't," he stuttered and I could visibly see the shaking of his hands. I took a deep breath, knowing I was going to have to do it. Reaching my hand out, my hand connected with Bellamy's and I slowly took the knife from his hands. I ran my fingers through Atom's hair and smiled, although several tears escaped.

"OK," I spoke quietly, trying to soothe Atom as much as possible. And myself. "I'm going to help you. Alright?"

I kept my fingers in Atom's hair with my left hand, despite it causing me serious pain from the burns. I began to hum, it was a song my mum used to sing to me when I was little. It had always calmed me down and I needed it to do the same right now. Slowly, I put the knife against the side of Atom's neck, knowing there was a vein in there that once the knife went in, he would die instantly, feeling no pain. Sliding the knife into his neck, I almost heard his sigh of relief as the life went out of his eyes. I finished the song and turned to look at Bellamy, who was just watching me with an unreadable look on his face. Standing up, I brushed the dirt off my knees and walked around to where Bellamy was. Looking at the floor, I felt him take the knife out of my hands.

"Kennedy," I heard him whisper, causing me to look up at him. He pulled me into a hug, and we stayed like that for several minutes.

"Come on," I finally managed to speak, unwrapping my arms from around his torso. "We need to get him back to camp."
