The loud ringing of my telephone causes me to wake up. I lightly gasp as I look at the clock on my wall. Nine fifteen in the morning. I quickly reach over to the handle, placing the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" My husky voice asks.

"Good morning sunshine." A cocky voice says.

"Duke." I sigh as I sit up in my bed. "What do you want?"

"That's no way to treat your partner." He teases.

"You're lucky I don't hit you." I run a hand through my messy hair.

"I have a fun assignment for us today." I don't need to see him to know he's smirking.

"What's your definition of fun?" I exhale a breath.

"I need you to spend the day at the beach."

I immediately swing my feet over the mattress. "You don't need to tell me twice."

"We just heard back from the bank. They found some pretty interesting shit."

"Well, are you going to tell me?" I roll my eyes as I press the phone closer to my ear.

"Grains of sand were found on the counter when the guy with the turtleneck jumped up. It scuffed from his black shoes." He slowly says.

"Sand?" I nod my head, understanding his message.

"Looks like the masked phantoms spent some time at the beach."

"Duke, that's like everyone in the state of California." I cross my ankles together while looking down.

"Just scope out Santa Monica Beach. That's where most of the surfers go."

"This is pointless, but okay." I would never argue going to the beach.

"Now, get your ass ready. I have a surprise waiting for you in the lobby of your apartment complex." He begins to laugh.

"Wait, what?" I furrow my eyebrows.

"You'll see Jacobs." And with that, he hangs up.

"Fucking ass." I mutter to myself as I rise to my feet.

I walk over to my small closet and pull out a plain black bikini. Once it is on my body, I take out a pair of light denim shorts and slide them up my legs. I tie my hair up into a messy bun and put together my beach bag. I grab my keys and head out of my apartment.

I don't even want to know what Duke has waiting for me in the lobby. I slip into the elevator and make my way downstairs. When the doors up, he's standing right in front of me with his hands behind his back. A smirk is plastered on his smug face.

"What the hell are you doing?" I laugh as I step out of the small space.

"I brought you a surprise."

"Is it an egg sandwich? Because I could really go for one night now." I smirk as I step closer to him.

"Even better." He holds out a black walkie talkie in front of me.

"You're joking." I say unamused.

"Nope, take it." He practically tosses it in my hand. "If you see anything suspicious, tell me immediately."

"Whatever." I mutter as I walk past him, heading toward my car in the parking lot.

"I'll meet you there." He says and I nod.

The bright sun is beating down on me, in the best way possible. I will never get over this warm weather all the time. I unlock my car and slip into the driver's seat. The low sound of the radio fills my ears as I pull away from my complex. It isn't a far drive, making it even easier to get to the beach. I grip onto the steering wheel as I think back to my conversation with Grayson last night. There's something about him that draws me in. His personality is outgoing and his attitude is always confident. He definitely knows how to sweet talk a woman.
